Some of the information is accurate, some of it is not.

I'm all for reporting adverse reactions etc, but this is exactly the type of site that proprogates information that has yet to be proven or settled (although it isn't as bad as other sites, at least they seem to be following and posting updates).

Today I had to call the vet.....last week he prescribed a 7 day course of Rimadyl for Crystal's leg injury. During the first few days of treatment, Crystal vomited and I thought nothing of it. Today, she vomited 3 times and when I called him, he told me to discontinue it. I only had one more day to go.

I put the site in Favorites but haven't had time to read it. Then, too, I had been thinking about Crystal, wondering how she did on the Rimadyl...

I am sorry to hear Crystal is having a reaction. My big girl will be 9 in a few weeks and sometimes in bad weather seems to be having arthritis discomfort, but I am so fearful of the prescription meds (maybe because I am unable to take most of the ones that are for arthritic humans :( ...)

`Eowyn had her annual check-up last month. In my memo to her vet I mentioned the occasional stiffness and that I did not want to go to the prescription remedies unless he felt it was really necessary. He agreed and said to give her 2 Ascriptin (325 mg aspirin buffered with Maalox) at these times. I have done this twice now several days apart, in really awful weather or when the silly pooch has gone bonkers and charged up and down stairs a lot... I give it at bedtime, with cottage cheese or a little milk, and encourage her to drink water... So far so good; it seems to really help. Vet said the dose could be repeated in 12 hours but I don't think I would take a chance on that - and it hasn't seemed needed.

Ah, these big dogs! There's nothing like 'em and I wouldn't have it any other way, but sometimes wish I'd fallen for JRTs or Corgis instead!

Have you considered Cosequin? It's probably the safest neutraceutical on the market (and carries excellent research behind it). May not work for every dog, and it may take up to 6 weeks or more to notice effects, but it's worth discussing with your vet.

We're using a lot more Metacam and Zubrin as it doesn't seem as likely to cause the GI upset that the others do. Of course, it still requires careful monitoring if used long term.

I agree with Cosequin! It is a great product. They make it for cats, too.

I'm finding that the best prescription the vet gave me is to keep Crystal leashed for awhile.
She is much calmer around the house and isn't going crazy and getting hurt. She's not getting that much exercise though. I'm going to give her leg another week to heal (it seems fine already) and then start walking her every night after dinner.

Is there a difference between Cosequin and Cosamin?

Cosamin is for humans, Cosequin is for pets.
