I miss my Homey.

Post by Sue »

:( Hello all. Two days ago, one of my cats (which I had 9 altogether) died very suddenly. My husband and I noticed that he was just laying around (not normal for him at all) and meowing a little different than normal. We decided to take him to the vet. Being on a Sunday though, we had to rush him to the emergency clinic 20 miles from our home. Once we got him into the car, he started meowing louder and louder. I sped down the road while my husband held him in a towel in his arms. We kept checking on him to make sure he was still breathing because it was becoming more and more still. We made it about halfway to the emergency clinic and he died (right in my husband's arms). I cried and cried and am still crying. It was so sudden. I also feel like I may have caused his death. I'm not sure. I had bought my cats all new flea collars. I accidently bought dog flea collars instead of cat flea collars. Once I opened them at home, I noticed they were the wrong ones. Instead of taking them back and getting the right ones, I decided to use them for the cats anyway. It was two days after that that my cat died. I feel responsible despite the fact that the vet said that the wrong flea collar wouldn't have killed him; all that it would have done was maybe give him an allergic reaction. I don't know. All I do know is that my cat was fine; I put the flea collar on him; two days later he was dead. I'm having a very hard time with the guilt and loss that I feel. I thought that maybe posting a message on this website would help me to relieve some of my guilt. Thank you all for listening. :(

I'm very sorry about your loss, how tragic.

Without knowing other factors, or your kitty's age, health status, etc, it's impossible to wager any guess, but the flea collars should be suspect, and better yet, they need to be trashed immediately.

Do NOT ever use flea collars on cats, and least of all, dog products for cats. Many many many dog products contain lethal permethrins that should never be given to cats.

Just Say No

Permethrin Toxicosis

For what it's worth, your vet should know better, and I would strongly suggest getting a new vet. Also, if you have a flea problem, the safest products are those prescribed by your vet ONLY, such as Advantage or Frontline for cats.

I'm truly sorry for your loss, my heart goes out for Homey......

I am also very sorry for your loss. I echo Traci's advice as well.

The only time I use a flea collar is in the bag of the vacuum cleaner. Whether the flea collar was the reason for Homey's journey to the Bridge, please see to it that the other collars are removed from the rest of your cats.

I am sorry about your loss...I know you must feel awful, but, please do not be too hard on yourself...you did what you thought was right at the time...

Please read the links about collars and only use a vet recommended treatment in the future...and keep an eye on the other kitties for anything unusual...

Again...I am sooo sorry...

:) I just wanted to let everyone know that read my message that I am starting to feel better. I found out that I did not cause my cat's death. Thank God. My tremendous guilt I felt is beginning to subside. Thank you all for the nice messages to me and for the prayers you said for my Homey. I continue to miss him dearly, but I am getting better (slowly) thanks to the kind words I've received. God bless you all. :)
