"stop scratching the couches!!!" (help!)

Post by firemuse »

My 11 month old cat is being a bad boy! :(
We got new couches and he wont stop scratching them. He has a 6 foot cat tree that we recently got him, and he uses it alot, but still wants to scratch the couches!!!
We use the spray bottle and tell him NO or NO SCRATCHING, but he keeps on doing it. He knows hes not supposed to though, cause he tries to be sneaky about it and tries to keep his eyes on us while hes doing it. BRAT!
Anyone know what might help????

If you flip over to page four of this forum, there will be a post entitled "clawing" that I started a few weeks ago. It is on page four and about the third post down. There is alot of good information within this post and Traci (the system administrator) included a link to another forum with answers to clawing questions. Good luck!!!

I don't know if this is covered in that topic but you can buy some hormonal spray scent at the pet shop. It's expensive, I paid about $20 for a small spray can, but it really works. It's a scent that is attractive to cats in a good way and they won't want to put their scent over it, which is what they do when they claw. I don't know why it works but it does. I have a leather sofa that was getting too much attention and I spray this stuff on (leaves no stain) and the cats won't claw it. Whatever scent is in this stuff is not detectable by me so it's nothing that is offensive or odd. I needed to reapply about once a week but then I found that the cats went back to their scratching post and didn't bother my sofa any longer. I haven't sprayed the sofa in over 6 months since they've gone back to their own post but I have the can in the drawer.....just in case! I'm sure if you go in a pet shop and ask, they'll know the stuff I'm talking about. I'd give you the name of it but I'm not at home to look at the can and I don't remember the brand name. I got it at Petsmart. You could even look at their online store.

Weve got 7 indoor kits & the battle to save the furniture is fought on 3 fronts.

1.) Feliway works. Its worth the money. Follow the directions carefully.

2.) I carefully trim everybody's front claws about once a week with nail clippers.

3.) Our kits have 1 large kitty condo & 1 small that they love to scratch on. It satisfies the urge & saves the furniture.

(BTW, you already know that scolding, punishing, disiplining, doesnt work but its always worth mentioning.)
