head tremors?

Post by KristinB NLI »

I experienced something new and a bit frightening last night--Carter was sleeping on the bed with me while I was watching TV and all of a sudden his head began to tremor/shake. This happened several times within about 1 1/2 hours. The rest of his body was still, just his head was trembling. It didn't wake him or seem to cause him any pain or fear. It wasn't like dreaming, though. I was afraid he was having some type of seizures. I called the ER vet and they said to just watch him and if it got worse, to bring him in. He seemed fine when he woke up, alert and happy as usual, and was fine this morning. He's eating well and has normal energy levels.

Has anyone experienced this?

it could be a mild seizure or the effects of a dream, if dogs dream....keep a diary as to when and how often it occurs...describe the symptons, enfironment etc etc...keep accurate records and if it continues then try to video it and take it to yuour vet...it may be nothig but it al may be a miler seizure....

How old is Carter and when was his last vet-check and bloodwork?

Agree with the vet and Davet....watch him closely, and if it occurs again, get him in promptly, and opt for blood profiling.

Sorry, I left out a few details...Carter is a five year old labrador retriever. He had his last annual exam and bloodwork (at least for heartworm) in May, 2004. He has been to the vet for minor things (i.e. stomach upset) since then, but no other problems. I haven't noticed this again, but have made an appointment with my preferred vet for next week to discuss it. I am watching him closely to see if it does happen again, and will record any other activity.

Where do you live? Any chance he may have Lyme disease?

We are in Georgia. He is on flea/tick preventative (Frontline) and I haven't seen any ticks on him or gotten any off of him while brushing him, but I will ask the vet about that too.
