Slipped Disk~ need advice
Slipped Disk~ need advice
well yesterday morning, i could tell emmett was going to need a new chiro appt.
i cant get in till next week.
he would sit, and didnt want to lay down, well than when he did lay down, he was on his side, and didnt move much at all, in the aft, he cried in horrible pain when trying to get up, so i called the vet, and they got us in right away.
i told her that this is the worst it has ever been, she said slipped disks do not show up on xray, i asked her why they cant see them, she said the deteriorating of the individual spine bones can be seen, but not the disk in between them.
she is positive that the disk is doing this to him.
we have not discussed any thing yet, but has anyone had experience with this?
i am giving him duralactin, a natural chronic inflamation product, it helped for a time, but like i say yesterday was horrible for him.
we gave him a shot of pred, at this point i dont care, he needed it, and he is on the tabs, we go in again tuesday and i will find out more when i go.
thank you for any help on this matter.
Xray showed no deterioration of his individual spine pieces.

lots of time the "slipped" disc (actually there is
thing as a "slipped" disc...it is a herniated disce where the Nucleus pulposi, or the gook in the disc acts as a cushion leaks out. it doesn't show on x-ray unless by myelogram which is risky..i don't think this situation would call for chiropractic stuff at all. he should have been on pred or some other anti inflammatory medication from the very beginning...the problem is that there is inflamation and pressure around that disc area an you gotta get that inflkammation down rapidly or paralysis will result...don't worry about the pred for this situation...it is essential to reduce the inflammation and pred will do it but it has to be given at onset.chiro manipulation can cause more pressure..
this is all screwed up..should read there is no such thing
as a slipped disc--it is aherniated or ruptured disc....
biscotti had a ruptured disc about 3 years ago
I know there are different ways of treating this, and not being a Vet, I don't know the difference. In Biscotti's case, she was given steroids for 24 hours. With no improvement, she was sent to UGA immediately for surgery. We were told surgery is most effective if done within 48 hours. She has made a 100% recovery, and I don't regret doing it at all. With this in mind, I would not hestitate to seek a second opinion...And yes, this all started on a weekend...I know that sometimes this is just treated with steroids, but I wonder if that is just palliative treatment. Keep in touch...I know what you are going through!
re Marts post...the secrete for surgery is to get i within
the first few days, as was done in martys case...after that, if paralysis has taken place then it is a matter of steroids, swimming, massage etc and hope the compression decreases before damage is done..Good thing marty went to UGA, course would have been better to go to Auburn where i went to vet school, and learned this procedure under Dr. Ben Hoerlein who developed it....just kidding Marty, you went to a good place...but in Newfies case i don't think Chiro should be done at all because you want to keep the manipulation or movement down as much as possible, thusly the pressure down and not screw around with moving the joint...just my opinion
Thanx guys, we should have posted this sooner, this started years ago, on a search he jarred his spine, we did the poppy thing along the spine for treatment and he was good to go after 4 treatmens and pred.
now he was find for about 2 to three years since, and now at 8 1/2 years, i noticed it seems worse after a treatment, but not right away, he had flare ups this year, now, more than ever and it seemed three weeks after treatment with the poppy thing along the spine, he is getting worse after each one, wich it has been three times now.
so.....
should i ask her to keep him on pred for each time it flares up davet?
he was given a shot yesterday, had the tablets today, will get more tonight and than until tuesday.
thanx for any help i truly appreciate it.

in lieu of surgery etc i would put her on pred as needed
for maybe a few day till the symptons are relieived...if X-rays were taken today and there is a history or several years then you would probably fine bone changes, ie spondylitis or bridgine of bone from one vertebra to the next...i was under the impression that this was the first event..you might aske you vet for a few extra pred tables to be given immedietly once an episode starts....i am not big of chiropractic manipulations on cases like this because any extra movement, either in the beginning or later episodes...you want to rest that vetebral area and not agge=rebvate it...which again reminds me of a story, had a chiropractitioner bring his doxie in for disce problem..he said no to steroids which i had to aquess (sp) to because he would take the dog home and do his chiro moves on the dog...he did this and the first thing that happened is the dog bite the hell out of him and the second thing that happened was permanant paralysis of the doxi who had to be euthanized later due to pain and incontenance etc...if your vet is not up to givine extra pred tables than you could always give abourt 1\2 aspirin for about three dosess...but check with your vet on this...but ask about the extra pred tablest.--again just an opinion and not cvorrected for errors...
Davet, recent xrays showed no changes in the spine itself. so i am wondering, if a disk is slipped for an amount of time, will it eventually cause change of conformation of the spine itself?
so far we do not see anything wrong, except his almost paralyed state with tonns of pain.
good idea on asking for extra pred.
i will do that.
thanx!
dont worry about typing boo boos, i have them all the time.

walking should be ok as long as it is not overdone and
you have to judge that for itself...good back massage (gentle) is helpdfull and swimming is great, even in a bath tub. The biggest thing yu want to avoid is "spinning" ie throwing a ball and have the dog chase it whereby he stops and spins around to get it etc...but i am sure your dog will let you know this hurts...also if there seems to be some loss in back legs it helps to pinch the toes just enough to get him to pull the leg up, doing this every so often helps keep the muscles functioning...but swimming is great...or i guess you would term it hydro therapy
