training my puppy

Post by Kriss »

hi i have been trying to train my puppy (9 months old) to "come here" on command. she is bad about "ignoring people'. i have done the same way as with all my dogs. I put a thin long leash and chain collar and say "come" and give her a gentle firm yank. she does this Very Very good and so far all i do is say "come"....but when shes off-leash she completely disregards any and all commands. its as if she knows i cant tug her when shes loose. any ideas :?:

Hey my yellow lab at the same problem. Perfect little angel when she was within hand reach but once she knew she was unabel to be disciplined she would ignore me and take off running! I learned that if you NEVER discipline them once they come back that will help. But try putting her in like a big open pasture if you have one and ever single time she comes to you give her a treat and say good girl with the highest tone of voice you have while shes coming. And when you are telling her to come and she is ignoring you use the low tone of voice no to whatever she is sniffing or paying attention to and as soon as she looks up at you and pays attention to you go back to the good girl tone of voice. That worked for me. Good luck to ya :D

Recall

Post by JMM »

She's a puppy. A reliable recall with distractions can be very tough on a busy puppy. It doesn't sound like she is ready for that yet.

For starters, how about keeping her on a long line instead of letting her loose. Set her up to succeed (you can always help her come with the lead) rather than fail.

One of the things that really helped me with recalls outside with distractions was to let my dog get interested, call then, big treat, then let them go back to their interest. It helped them to learn that every call did not mean going inside. The dog park is not a good place for this. Your yard or on a walk is.

Every time she comes, have a good treat and praise ready. It should never be a bad experience.

Don't let her fail! If you know you can't help her with the come, then don't call her. Run the other way and make silly noises to get her to chase you. You can also do this when practicing the recall. It helps make it fun. Don't call her and have her fail.

Get into obedience class, too. You will learn a lot about communicating and building a happy relationship with your dog.
