New cats

Post by achaholic »

I am currently in a catless household due to an unfortunate bout with CRF. My fiance and I decided that we want to get 2 cats as opposed to the 1 we used to have. We have located 2 cats, both about a year old, that we want at two separate shelters. We were hoping to introduce them together to our apartment so hopefully they would assimilate to the new environment together. The one shelter cannot hold him long enough for the other shelter to accomodate bringing both home on the same date. So it appears that one will be introduced to the apartment about a week before the second.

Should I be concerned about the first one getting used to a 1 cat household for a week and having trouble getting along with the second cat? It appears that both cats have a friendly but active demeanor in our meeting with them. Any ideas on how to minimize any aggression to each other or just make the transtition for both as smooth as possible?

I have read about keeping one cat in its own room until they're used to the surroundings, but it would be difficult to maintain this with 2 cats as we live in a one bedroom + den apartment. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Hi Brian,

Cogratulations on your soon to be kitty family. Here is a link in feline health that may help you.

Maybe others on the board will have some good advice to help you in your particular situation. Keep us posted on how it goes.My only word of advise is to be patient. You may need to use the den and maybe a bathroom to separate the kitties as needed.
