my rocky recently had p/u and was a *last resort* decision based on months of trying everything else.
recently (post p/u) he started going into dark closed areas and whining. i was naturally worried about either more crytals or perhaps the first of many infections i am looking forward to.
i made a visit to the vet today and they "checked him out" to be sure the p/u area was healed properly. they also took a urine sample from him (he spent half a day with no litter box to make that part easier).
glad to say the results are negative for infection with only small amounts of crystals. vet said that it was expected at this point. his ph level was an even 7 which was a good sign of his diet (cd/s).
ok...getting to the issue now. the vet and i beleive that the whining is due to a behvioral responce. about two-three weeks ago, a racoon made its way to the back porch and ate the cat food. i have replaced some damaged screen and have "shooed" away the racoon once...have not seen it back.
the feeling is that rocky had a close encounter with the racoon and is frightened. rocky shows no other behavioral signs and eats/drinks/urinates normally. other than loving him, suggestions?
whinny cat syndrome (scared kitty)
Absolutely, that could have been a stresser! The coon might also have left a scent, so maybe try spraying the area (the screen) and any other non-porous surfaces with water and a disinfectant.
Good news on the urinalysis, I'm assuming the number of crystals are less than he predicted, good job Jason!

thanks all....appreciate the advice. rocky is such a trooper, he will be happy soon i'm sure.
not sure how much less, but at least she was pleased with the number/size of them. he at one point had 1/3 of his uretha jam packed (blocked) in addition to whatever was stuck in his bladder .Traci wrote:I'm assuming the number of crystals are less than he predicted
jason,
I deal with a lot of fearful cats especially right at first when they come here. I use the following procedure (for lack of a better word) with them, and have had good overall results.
Most of the time the cats here come here feeling like prey. They have been victimized by either sick individuals, or beaten down by outside life. They generally retreat into the darkest corner of our closet and moan, or cry or hiss.
I take a peacock feather and engage them in play. I try to reassert within them that THEY are the predator, not the prey. I even moved a cat post into the closet to give them a sense of security. It works quite well, it just takes time, perhaps it will work for Rocky too?
