New Cat Perch...Happy Cats!!

I have been doing some minor remodeling in our home, and for the longest time, I have wanted to put up wall shelves along the back wall of our dining room...

Our dining room is huge, as big as our living room, and is seen through an archway from the living room into the dining room...
Along the west wall, is a window, but it is close to five feet off the floor, and runs almost the entire width of the room...

I put our five foot long computer desk at one end of that wall, and my son's four foot long desk for homework at the other end of the wall, and still have six feet between them...in between the desks, I attached L brackets to the wall and four shelves for books and knickknacks...well, three of them are for books and whatnots...the very top shelf is about 3 inches below that window, and I staggered the shelves so the cats can jump from a desk up onto a lower shelf to get to their new shelf/perch...

I still need to get some fabric to make a softer place for them to lay....I will probably get a length of some furry fabric, then I can cut it into two or three lengths to fit the 6 feet of shelf, and fill it with a quilting batting...add some elastic to attach it to the shelf at either end so it does not slide off...and by making two or three of them, I can always have one one the shelf, one in the wash and another ready to put on if it gets soiled...

Now our cats have a whole new view....out the west window they have never been able to sit in before
And that window looks out onto a three acre pasture then a creek and treeline...so lots of wild critters are always in our backyard...

That's neat Tambrey...I've thought of doing something of the sort for our cats, but we don't have that much room right now. When we move I intend to make our new house very cat friendly!

I like this a lot! Great use of available space. Love your house - I lived in one of that era in Cedar Rapids many years ago and had fun with "eclectic" decorating... 1950s 'modern' wrought iron furniture in rooms with oak panelling and stained glass windows for example LOL...

Also, thanks for the link... I may give them a try - have no complaints so far with my picturetrail membership but the large prints offer looks good.

BTW, was it you who recently mentioned the cable channel H & G [either House & Garden or Home & Garden] I discovered it this weekend - it has shows with cool decorating ideas.

I love our old house...it was built in 1911...10 foot ceilings, lots of old oak woodwork...

I would love to get the house back to original...old furniture and all that...

The cats are really liking the shelf, however, hubby is not so sure when they jump up onto the desk to get to the shelf while he is working at the computer...LOL

We live north of Sioux City here in NW Iowa...

I like using ofoto to share pics with people...I have some albums that do not show any longer, though because I have not bought any pics from them...I still have links to the albums, they just do not show on my album page...so I guess keep that in mind if you go with ofoto...

Nope, it was not me who mentioned the show...but I am sure I would love to see that one...I used to do interior design and I have my degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design...
