Aww...Winnie has surgery on Friday

Post by Marty »

She has a lump on her tail...it was aspirated and an infection found. She has been on antibiotics for 2 weeks, and it is not red anymore, but is just as big. Vetman suggests we get it off before it gets bigger and she loses part of her tail. It will be hard to repair if it gets bigger. I would miss that helicopter tail, He thinks it is just a cyst, but will send it off for tests to be sure.

Oh dear, poor Winnie. Will she have to wear the Elizabethan collar? It wasn't feasible (sp?) for my Winnie when she had a cyst removed from her flank, so they substituted a weird foam-and-velcro deal which looked sort of like a neck brace... what fun that was... not! But she got through all okay. Hope your Winnie does also!

They didn't say anything about that, but we do have to stop her from hitting things when she wags, so she doesn't break it open.

Somewhere I was reading that if your dog keeps injuring it's tail to use some of that foam stuff they wrap aound pipes to protect your dog. I wonder if that would help? Good luck with the surgery.

Hmmmmmm - an E-collar for the tail. Somebody needs to patent that one!

I hope Winnie is doing well and recovers quickly.

your vet was right about getting it done now because there is not a lot of skin on the tail to cover wounds when they get to large, if that happens you have to start grafting...also that foam rubber pipe covering is good because sometimes if enough is on it the dog cant reach to bite the wound...every time they turn around towards it the tail swings out back away from them...i guess i shouldn;'t say what i used to tell cerrtain clients...don;t loose your head over a piece of tail....guess i shouldn;t say that so i didn;t

Well, she made it through OK.......he didn't take off part of the tail. it will be a somewhat open wound for a while. But he found another lump on her "ankle" which was harder and more ominous....he took that off too. None of us saw that beforehand. And they recleaned her teeth.....dang, it was done on Nov 22, and he said the tartar build-up was amazing. Any clues on that one......? I will talk to him more when I pick her up tomorrow.
