Newly Spayed Mom & Her Kittens

Grace came home from the vet today after being spayed, vaccinated, etc.
The kittens (7 wks today) have been without her for two days now and have been doing fine eating canned kitten food.

Although I expected that she would not want to nurse the kittens, I had hoped to reunite them when she came home. Vet says keep them separate. The kittens know she's in the house, and pretty close by because they're all segregated from my other three cats. I think she and they are a little distressed at being separated.

Any opinions about uniting them, pro and con?

the kittens can get to her but not to nurse or disrupt the incision...obviously you do not wrap it to tight but enough to cover her nipples...she will dry up but it just might be good to let them get a little bonding..try it, if it doesn't work themn keep them separate..of together with you there

Thanks, Davet. They did do the kind of stitches you had recommended. I'll just supervise and see how it goes....or maybe give her one night in the "slammer" and try it tomorrow.

Pat...when Willow was spayed she was reunited with her kitten right after. I only allowed them together when I could supervise, otherwise they were seperated...Fluffernutter did try to nurse on her but she wasn't too tolerant of it.

We tried it for awhile tonight, but Grace is back in the bathroom and the kittens are in the office. They got a little rambuncious, jumping on her and playing with her tail. She didn't mind the occasional kitten nursing, but I'm sure would not have put up with all four.

I'll let them be together some tomorrow, but I'm sure she needs to rest.
My big problem containing these monkies is that I have hardwood floors and the doors are cut a little high. They can still squeeze under the doors and just appear out of nowhere!
