I found a lost cat on Christmas night ~ update

Post by Tina B and crew »

Poor boy seemed so happy to see humans and tried to get into my daughters car to go home with her. I picked him up because he was in the street and carried him up to the house front porch and he hung around...so I decided to check him out closely. He is very big, healthy looking too...so I know he must have a home. On top of that he is declawed. Knowing that I brought him into screened porch, set him up a litter box, some food and water and a nice comfy bed. He made himself at home and gave me a ton of pressies. It was too late to canvass the neighborhood last night, so we will do it today after church. I did call our next door neighbors and they don't know of anyone who it could belong to. We are pretty sure he isn't from right around here on our street. Monday I will take him to be scanned for a microchip, put a lost cat ad in the paper and some lost cat flyers up around the neighborhood (sans description of course)...I might have him tested just so I can bring him in instead of leaving him on the porch. If I don't find his owner he will have to go to a rescue place, or the humane society...I cannot keep another cat. :?

Wish me luck..I'll post a pic of him later!

It is so sad there are so many lost animals out that, so many owners that just dump their animals. On the street where i own a store, this dog showed up, looked like a pure breed boxer. He was healthy and his fur shiny. He hung out on our street for about a month, me and some other shop owners leaving him food. (I would have taken him home but I live in a small apartment), then I didn't see him for a few months, but he turned up again, this time looking rail thin and pitiful. His fur full of patches and sores all over his face. (I live in Portugal and they don't have any system of animal shelters set up here.) With this in mind, I read about a women in Texas who paid $50,000 for a clone of her cat. As if there aren't enough stray animals put down every year, we need to clone ones that already died. I know it can be a painful experience to loose a loved family member, but finding a new love can be just as rewarding.

Tina, I wish you luck finding his owners, hopefully he is just lost, and his owners didn't dump a defenseless declawed cat out on the street.

Thanks k @ t...I know it's ridiculous what some will do when others are so bad off...how sad.

I put up a sign on my mailbox, put an ad on petfinders.com, and will put up signs around the neighborhood and an ad it the paper tomorrow. I've also asked around the closest neighbors...so far no luck. He's still on my back porch. I've put a heating pad under his bedding because it's so cold tonight, but I just don't have anyplace to really put him inside, especially since I still have company. He seems to be comfortable and is eating very well!! His paw pads are rough almost as if he goes out regularly or has been lost a while. I do know that if someone lets this cat out regularly I don't want them to take him back...not a declawed cat. :x

Here are some pics of the big guy!!

Isn't he beautiful!!

awwwwww!! How cute! If I was still there in the US I would take him!! I know we aren't suppose to talk about declawing here, but I just wanted to note that here in Portugal, and in most european countries, its illegal. They consider it cruel and unusual punishment to an animal. I know people choose to do that, but if they do, my gosh, at least keep them inside an out of harms way! He really is adorable, hopefully you will find some one that will take him, he seems very calm.

Good news!! I found "Ozzy's" owners....I took him to the vet my daughter works for this morning to have him scanned for a microchip and sure enough he had one. That allowed us to locate the vet he had been microchipped at and they had already had report that the cat was missing. I dropped him off at the vets office by noon today, learned that his name was Ozzy and they were very thankful that we found him. So far I have not heard from the owners...I did leave my contact info. I'd like to know how far he got myself!

Happy ending...I like happy endings!! And my kitties are happy because they have their screened porch back!!

I am glad that Ozzy is back home again...I just hope he does not escape, or worse yet, get let outside, again...

I am sure he is happy to be home too...

BTW...he is a beautiful cat! I like tabby's...we have a few ourselves...mostly orange and white ones, but one that is grey tigerstriped with bits of orange and white like Ozzy...but Cuddles is a dainty delicate thing...very short legs and miniature feet...I almost wonder if she was bred to be one of those dwarf cats...

Awww, he certainly is beautiful. Thanks for trying to locate his owners and caring for him. I hope he does have good owners that miss him and will take good care of him.
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

Our theory was possibly that with the hustle and bustle of the holidays and possibly company coming and going is the culprit of his "escape"....I hope we don't ever see him again and I hope his "guardians" don't let him out on a regular basis. At least we know the "guardians" had reported him missing....I still wonder if I will hear from them. I know if my cats went missing and I found that someone had taken them in and kept them safe I would want to thank them.
