Struvite crystals...........

Post by LisaK »

Kodi has had crystals and high pH (like eight) on and off since I first took in a urine sample when he was four months old. I even took him to a veterinary referral center when he was 6 mos for a sonogram and cystocentisis - both were clear. Then they were back, so I tried vitamin C 500 mg 2 x a day per the vet and this seemed to help, but came back again so vet said try 3 Vit C a day and that's not doing it. My vet wants him to eat C/D for 30 days and retest. Just what kind of food is this - quality wise? He has been eating Eagle Pack Holistic - 24% protein - the C/D is 19%. Does higher protein cause the crystals? Does this food contain urinary acidifiers? What really bothers me is that this food contains BHA and BHT which I believe could cause cancer. I've mentioned this to my vet and he says there is no evidence of these things causing cancer or anything else and the amt used is very small and it's also in people food. Well, to me, that doesn't mean anything positive. I know there are urinary acidifier pills I could use, but vet wants to try changing diet first.

Is this a hereditary thing? Metabolic disorder? Does it have anything to do with a poor immune system? If Vit C (or cranberry caps) don't do anything, is there anything else to try?

Just so ya know, Kodi is 28 mos old and neutered. There were no red cells when the urinalysis was done (yesterday) and 0-2 white per field, which is normal, but "loads" of crystals (the vet said). He has never shown any symptoms or anything from having these crystals - I just took the first samples in because my other dog had UTI's a lot and I wanted to make sure everything was ok.

I imagine I'll be fighting these crystals the rest of his life, right?

His mom was a GSD/Australian Shepherd and the dad was supposedly a Golden Retriever. I know he has rottie markings, but he doesn't have the head, body, or ears of a rottie. I HAVE seen Australian Shepherds his color and with those ears and tail. There were 7 pups in the litter - 2 like Kodi, 2 looked like pb goldens and 3 looked like short haired, blk w/white terrier types - so there must've been 3 dads.

~~My sister's dog has crystals in her urine~~

Post by ShelbysMom »

She's on 1000 mg. of vitamin C daily.........but for some reason, our vet prescribed Science Diet W/D, not C/D. Just wondering why...perhaps there was something else that could've been a factor.
My sister's dog was diagnosed at 6 yrs. having the crystals...and has been diagnosed with them on and off for the last 3 years or so.
It seems when she took the dog off the vitamin C, they returned. But the dog was losing hair and she thought that could've been the cause.
Hope everything works out for you.........Kodi is a handsome boy!!

Winnie has had 2 surgeries for bladderstones, and

Post by Marty »

believe me, you want to avoid this. The amount of protein in the food does have something to do with it. Winnie is on d/d because she had a skin problem with c/d. Here is a site with more info...

you a question? Why did Winnie need two surgeries? Wasn't she being treated after the first surgery? Also, did you know she was producing crystals before she was diagnosed with the stones?

Good questions

Post by Marty »

She formed the stones 3 years apart. I am thinking she should have been monitored after the first one, but the Vet never said anything about it... she was put on the d/d...and 3 years later we have another emergency. She is being monitored now. Still waitiing on the results for the type of stone. He suspects it is a different kind-one formed as the result of an infection. I took her in, just because I felt something was not right with her-she didn't have accidents, and I couldn't see anything, but she would run outside as I was fixing her meals, as if she needed to make room to eat. I know, that sounds strange...At 10 years, I really don't want to put her through this again-just waiting on the test results, before we make a new course of action. Good luck to you and yours...at least you know the tendency is there! Oh a good message board that I recently found-dedicated to stones in Schnauzers, but they welcome anyone

A lot of vitamin C

Post by BoxerTom »

1500 mg is a lot of vitamin C, too much for a human my size (I only take 500 mg and even that is overkill for my 185 lbs), and certainly too much for a dog. Have you tried vinegar - the one (and only) thing apple cider vinegar (and any other vinegar) is good for is acidifying the urine.

Regarding BHA, BHT I wouldn't worry about them. They have been well tested and deemed safe by FDA - virtually all kids dry cereals contain them. There is even evidence that they reduce the risk of cancer as they act as antioxidants.

Crystals can be perfectly normal in a dog...msg

Post by Julie B. »

and if there are not any other symptoms (changes in urination frequency, drinking excessively, painful urination, blood in the urine) then there is nothing to worry about. Crystals and stones are very different things. If all other parameters on urinalysis- (dipstick and sediment)are normal and the dog is healthy, there is really nothing to worry about.

Dietary change is a possibility if you are worried about the crystals. My lab had tons of struvites and a pH of 8.0 AND was urinating alot, so I switched the diet from Wellness back to Natural Blend and added some Cranberry Comfort (from NaturVet-available thru vets) for awhile. He's doing much better and the pH is back to normal range. Good luck
