EMERGENCY!!!!!!FLEA & TICK FORMULA MAY KILL

Post by Kayleee »

Tonight I bought Hartz Advanced Care 3in1 Flea and Tick killer and put it on my 2 cats and my Boxer. this was at 8:30pm at 1am I began bathing my animals with Dawn Dish soap trying to get the stuff off. It is now almost 3am and 1 of the cats has died and the older cat and boxer aren't in good shape. I just found out that this stuff has been on the news and Hartz has been notified of the dangers of their product and no one has yet to pull this stuff off the shelves!!!!!!! The emergency vet has already told me there isn't much I can do except make them comfortable and keep liquids in them. What no one, including the manager of my local 24 hour walmart understands, the cat that has died belongs to my 4 year old daughter and I have to explain to her come morning that her cat is dead. The other cat is my stud bengal and the boxer was given to my daughter by her dad who passed away in 2003.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I work for Walmart and printed out your post and am going to show it to my store manager tomorrow to see what he can do about it and see where things can go from there...I may be able to get ahold of home office and see what they can do too... I hope that I can get them to help and listen to what's going on.

1 hour update. The tremors and seizures in my bengal are not as severe as they were but he is still seizing and unable to walk. His pupils still don't dialate in bright light. But he attempts to turn his head to my voice. His legs are not as riggid and immovable as they were earlier. So it seems he is begining to improve :!:

The boxer is still in big trouble, she refuses all liquid and her tremors are still so severe she tries to bite anything close to her mouth. Her eyes are fixed and also will not dialate in bright light. Her legs are curled into her body and I can't get her to straighten them out at all, it even seems that her toes are curled and must be painful. As I type this she is laying next to me on the couch and my Bengal is laying under my legs on the recliner.

The manager of walmart has called me back but his response is less then promising. He apologized for the loss of 1 cat so far but said they just can't pull a product from the shelves that there is no proof that it causes an animal to become sick or die. Sooooo I am waiting on a friend to come sit with my daughter and I am going to take the product my reciept and all 3 animals(yes dead kitty too) to the walmart customer care desk and the manager!

OMG, Kaylee! I am so sorry for what you and your daughter are going through. Please keep us updated as you are able...

There have been numerous warnings on here about the dangers of Hartz and other OTC products.....the safest comes from your Vet.

My prayers are with you and your pets right now....

Thank you all.
My vet opened the office special for them this morning. My Bengal (Echo ) is improving but he is still having the muscle tremors and his reaction to the vet the tremors have made him sore. Which is understandable as she said his muscles have been contracting for several hours.
The Boxer (snow) isn't doing so well, early this morning and at the vet's she had a seizure that left her totally unresponsive. Her eyes are still fixed and my vet is afraid that if she pulls through one of the seizures has caused her to be blind. She gave them both a muscle relaxer, I just hope it gives them some kind of relief for a little while.

My vet of course wasn't to happy with me, but like I told her when you can't afford something most people will resort to something cheaper. But in my case it's costed me the health of my animals who mean as much to me as my daughter does. I even do the same with prescriptions for my daughter, I take the Generic over the name brand because of cost.

I told my daughter when I came home that her kitty had died last night, when she asked me why, I told her because I had been brainless enough to buy cheap flea medication and that the stuff hurt him. My sweet 4 year old said "Mommy it not your fault, bad people hurt my kitty you jus buyed it"
She wanted to help me bury her kitty next to her daddy's German Shepherd and when we were done she asked her daddy to "please play kitty ball with Lil Bit and show him how to use his angel wings"
I regret even looking at that stupid flea medication and not talking to my vet about not being able to afford Frontline.

You can file a grievance with Hartz through an attorney (your vet may be willing to release medical records for proof, ask him about it), there have been ongoing lawsuits over this situation for years. Unfortunately, the only action taken against Hartz was the EPA's action to force them to relabel the product to give a clearer warning label to consumers.

It is never worth it to skimp on price for over-the-counter products for pets. I'm so sorry about your loss.

Just Say No.
