To AL, Thanks for Seeing Me Through Tough Times
This morning I had to make one last visit to the vet with my good friend 'Al' this morning. 'Al' was diagnosed with a tumor 3 weeks ago; he was 13 years old. I had prepared myself for the worst, but was praying for a miracle. During those 3 weeks he had x-rays, blood tests and went through a regimen of prescriptions--and little by little he stopped playing, and running, and being the spirited, arrogant, fuss-budget I knew, loved and spoiled his whole life.
I cried when I put him in his carrier for the last time; I cried on the drive to the vet's; and I cried as he breathed his last breath. I knew that his time on this earth had come to an end 3 weeks ago, but I couldn't bear the thought of life without him.
I got 'Al' as a kitten, at a time in my life when everything had fallen apart-I'd lost my job, broken my engagement, moved back in with my parents, whatever could go wrong-did go wrong. At times I felt I had nothing to live for and I was ready to give up. But, I found 'Al' on the way to the unemployment office. He was so small and helpless; and he had ear mites, fleas, worms and mild toxidia. I had to feed him baby food with an eye dropper and give him different types of medicine 3 times a day. I didn't mind because it took my mind off my life and my problems.
To make a long story shorter, 'Al' got well and lived for 13 year; I got my life together, relocated from New Orleans, LA to Memphis, TN to Nashville, TN. Along the way, got my career on track, got my love life back on track and learned to deal with the curve balls life throws at you. It's going to be hard not having 'Al' around because he's been a constant in my life these past 13 years, but I'm counting on my family and friends to see me through these times. And my faith--God always promises that when one door closes, another one opens!
In Loving Memory of My Faithful Friend AL

Oh Monique, I am so sorry. What a wonderful mom you were, Al was so blessed the day you found him, and sounds as if you were blessed many times in return. Today is a very hard day but it will get better and try to replace this day in your mind with all the wonderful other days. As they say here he has now crossed the bridge and probably playing with all our friends that have crossed before him. Will be praying for you tonight. Wanda

Monique, my heart goes out to you.
I too had a wonderful companion of 13 years who was by my side for many trials of my life, he was more faithful to me than any human during those times in my life. When he made his journey, he took a part of me with him.
You both were given a very special gift...I hope you will treasure those special moments with him in your life, I'm sure you taught each other so much...and the love you shared will go with him, and it will remain in your heart forever.
Safe and gentle journey, sweet Al, you will be missed greatly.......(((HUGS)))

I am so sorry. I lost my wonderful deaf white cat, Xanth, to a like condition when he was 11 1/2... but he had always had a "tricky" digestive system and the tumor was not found until the day before I had to let him go, so at least I did not have to go through as long a time of worrying as you have.
Think of the Rainbow Bridge and sweet Al romping there...
You will be in my thoughts.

Was Al a New Orleans cat? Xanth was born either in the Quarter or Uptown, where the young man I worked with at Bookstar had moved just before he gave Xanth to me... More on that story another time. Take care.

Re: To AL, Thanks for Seeing Me Through Tough Times
Good Evening,
Thank you so much for your kind words, prayers and wonderful thoughts about Al. Today was strange because everywhere I walked in my house I expected to see him lying around or creeping about; and I had once less bowl to put out when I bed my other 2 cats (who were looking for Al). But I got through today because I was comforted with the thought that Al was no longer suffering. And I knew that somehow that everything would be alright.
By the way, Al was a gift from an old boyfriend of mine who lived in Uptown New Orleans. I used to live in the Garden District 1 block from Saint Charles Avenue. We moved from New Orleans in 1996.
Cherish you loved ones and your pets!

Monique,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time without Al. His life was enriched with you in it and I know it comforts you to know he is no longer suffering but running and playing with all of our furry loved ones across the Bridge.
Safe journey Al.
