my dog is a year and he still has accidents. we got him from the humane society when he was 8 weeks and they had already fixed him when he was 6 weeks. i've read that when they are fixed before 3 months there can be problems with consistency. he finally started to hold it during an 8 hour day with an occasional accident. But if we come home from work and then leave later in the evening he usually always has an accident. When he gets excited he will pee too. He knows that it's bad because when we come home he has his head down and tries to cruise outside so he doesn't get yelled at. I feel bad yelling at him because I don't know if he can really do anything about it. Does anyone have any suggestions, because we going through paper towels like hot cakes.

8 hours is a long time for any dog to have to hold their urine...plus, leaving him alone during evenings is also a plan for disaster. *Are* you spending time with him, and is there no way you can re-arrange your schedule to allow him outside at least once throughout the days?
I'm also curious to the amount of time you spend with him? (by this I mean quality time, playtime, activity, outdoor exercise time)
When was his last vet check-up? You really should get this done ASAP to ensure he is not developing a urinary tract infection or similar bladder problems.

i know lots of people who leave there dog alone for 8 hours while they are at work. When he was a pup, I would come home for lunch and let him out. In books they say to add 2 hours to how many months old they are and thats how long they can hold their urine. We spend lots of time with our dog, he is extremely spoiled. I take him on a 2 mile walk everday when I get home from work. And to the dog park on the weekends. We give him treats all the time and he usually sleeps in our bed too. So to answer your question, we spend lots of time with him. Like any normal people sometimes we like to go out to a restaurant for dinner and then maybe to a movie, so that is when we would come home from work on a Friday spend an hour or two with him then go out for a bit.
His last check up was when he got his last shots and our vet said he was a healthy little boy. We told him about the accident problem and he said his dog wasn't fully potty trained till he was 9 months old and to just wait it out a bit. We go in every 2-3 months to get his heart worm pill.

He does pee a little when excited, but I thought this was common in dogs sometimes. Our family dog would do that but she eventually grew out of it as she got older.

Eight hours isn't really abnormal, but some dogs can take a while to get to the point where they have that much control, and some never do get there. Allie still can't make it more than 6 hours, except in rare instances (She's 6 years old). I think Angel could go 12 hours, or even more, but she shouldn't - not with her history of bladder infections! Males are often more difficult to train than females.

This doesn't have anything to do with being 'fixed' at an early age. Problems with incontinence due to spaying are sometimes found in females, but, I haven't heard of any problems in males. He is a German Shepard/Boxer Mix and is about 90lbs. Our dilema is that he so big when he has accidents its not a little spot or a little pile, it's like Niagra Falls puddle in our kitchen.
It's just nice to hear that it is common for dogs to still have accidents at any age. I guess I keep comparing notes with our friends dog who was potty trained instantly. And never has accidents. He could also hold it for 12 hours but thats on rare instances. And we have a friend who grew up with dogs all his life. His parents do dog shows, classes and own a store. So sometimes he's like, oh, thats not normal for him to do that. But I try to tell him that our dog isn't a show dog and we never have trained him that intense like show dogs are usually trained.
