Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
It's Wed. and Cleo continues to get better. She's even getting less shy. She loves belly rubs. She has a tendancy to want to stay under the bed but when I put her on top of the bed she will stay. Until I medicate her. I think she is used to hiding in the park and always being fearful. I feel hopeful that she will continue to gain confidence. It's very interesting building a relationship with an older abandoned cat. She's just a love. I am still looking forward to the day we can get her dental, vaccines and de-parasiting. I can't wait. She even looks better, the coat is softer the facial expression softer as well. She acts just like my other black cat. I swear cats that share the same color also have similar personalities. She kneeds in the air when she gets belly rubs. She has a tiny little squeeky meow.

I agree with the same colours sticking together...
My three yellow and white ones tend to play together...the two calicos sleep together and spend most of their time together...my all black Sarah is a bit more of a loaner and likes my lap more, and so does my siamese persian mix...yet those two get along well...
I just brought in two foster kitties...more ferals we are taming and caring for...(I know, I just cannot help myself )...anyways, this little brother and sister are black, and they tend to go towards Sarah, the other black one, as opposed to any of the others...
Then I have Cuddles...a grey tiger striped "dwarf" looking cat..she just gets along with everyone and could care less as to what colour they are!!!!

I am glad to hear taht Cleo continues to improve

Two new ones, huh?
How are they all doing being in the house together? Do you ever have problems with fighting or anything? I worry about that but so far so good.
I notice more that the same colors have the same personalities. Same manorisms. Luckily blacks are so easy going and loveable. I do notice that Nan my orange and white tabby never gets into spats with Saharan my Turkish Van type of cat. She has no stripes but they share colors. They are also both very, very into cuddling and have to be right there with you. I think Traci once called orange and white cats very "dependant", hahahahaha!
Good luck with your new ones. Ferals can be tough. I wonder how this abandoned kitty, Cleo, did not end up turning feral. Maybe if they were once in a home they never forget and therefore can't turn feral? I was so worried she would have a hard time adjusting. I wonder what will happen when she is out of quarantine? I know having that new loft with that childproofed balcony is going to make a huge difference in how they feel. They will have more freedome and openness. They just scream now to go out on the balcony with me. They are literaly desperate for it.

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
Friday:
Vet saw Cleo yesterday. She said her mouth is much better. She has a round bald spot between her shoulders and the vet said it was a fungus and gave sent me to buy an anti-fungal spray. This is contagious as well so now I am wonder just how long until she can be out of quarantine.
She will have another check up on Monday and maybe another CBC. On this day she will determine when she can see the DDS.

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
What was the fungus and how did he determine it, by a skin scrape or culture? If he said ringworm, this can be difficult to treat and the cats should remain seperated until the condition clears, this could take up to two months or longer, depending on response to treatment...in the meantime, keep her room cleaned on a daily basis, thoroughly clean her litterbox and food/water dishes daily, etc.

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
I don't know. She did not do a scrape or culture. She pulled on the surrounding hairs too see how they came out and just said she had a fungus and sent me to buy that spray at the pharmacy. Do you think I need to culture this? This is getting really complicated. I might be moving into that loft soon and quarantine might be impossible there. I hope it's not ringworm and something that solves itself sooner. I will just die with two more months of quarantine. She said her defenses were down and that it was just a fungus. What now?

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
Your vet cracks me up
I don't think she can adequately identify a fungus without a skin scrape or culture...the only way to even hint at it without further testing is by using a wood's lamp, and even this method isn't accurate and shouldn't be used as a sole diagnostic tool.
A bald spot between the shoulders could mean just about anything...it could be an old scar from a wound that healed and the fur is taking time to grow back...it could be a slight reaction or allergic reaction to something...could be a flea bite allergy, etc etc etc. I wouldn't apply a fungal spray without knowing exactly what you're treating.
Ringworm is fairly easy to detect by a wood's lamp, but a culture should be done to confirm it so that the best treatment approach is implemented. Ringworm resembles a red rash with a bullseye appearance, and it is usually spread throughout the body, with several fur patches missing. Other forms of fungal problems should be determined by skin scrape or culture. Immunological forms of fungal disease need bloodwork to confirm.
So, if it isn't ringworm, etc, then the seperation from the other cats probably won't be too long, but your vet really needs to confirm using a reliable test....she can at least look at a follicle under a slide under the microscope to rule out mites, flea allergy dermatitis, etc.
I would call her and ask how she determined this a fungus, and if the spray is really appropriate (my guess is it is not).

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
The two newset additions are getting along for the most part with everyone...the little girl...a furry all black(with a hint of red at the tips) fluffball we named Sissy (because she is the sister) got her motor going from day one and was always cuddly with anyone who would give her a chin rub...and she right away started rubbing her mouth along our fingers...but she was all hissy spitty and fluffed up to her full extent for the first day or two we began introductions, but she is letting Tiglet give her baths now...hahaha....Tiglet will lick any of them until they would be bald if they let her....and sometimes when they try to get away, she will growl and hold them down with her paws...
Majik, the boy, is a beaufitul sleek, shiny all black with only a few whisps of white on his throat and tummy is being more stand-offish and still hissy spitty and runs and hides alot...but he was the one outside who was much more difficult to catch...I felt bad for him when we first caught him because hubby caught him by his tail as he tried to run away(hubby was going for the scruff, but when he was slipping away, just grabbed ahold and did not let go)...of course, Majik was fine, just was more leery of hubby for a few days...and it took a few more days to get his motor running again...
I will try to get somer good pics to post, but they are so very dark (both have golden eyes) that they just do not show up well in pictures!! I need to get them against a white background...but then the camera pics up the white and darkens them even more!!

Re: Traci, abandoned cat that I may have to take home....
I remember many years ago, before all the new tests and such...our vet used a blacklight to diagnose ringworm...
He turned off all the lights in the room, except the blacklight, and Tigger looked like a beautiful pile of gold glitter on the table...he said that was the ringworm fungus...
To treat...he said Tigger needed an iodine bath....he asked if I wanted to do it at home....LOL..Tigger was 18 pounds of pure fight...I said no way was I trying that at home..he laughed and said he if did, he was going to put him under...I asked when he wanted to do it, it was a Friday evening, but he said he had no plans for the evening, so we might as well do it if my evening was free...since his assistants had already left, I stayed and he told me how Tigger would look when he went to sleep...eyes bugged out and tongue straight out of his mouth...he put some ointment on his eyes...then gave him the bath, rinsed him and blew dried him and put him into a carrier...for me to take home...yes...
I opted to take him home and put him, in the carrier, in the spare room..the vet said under no circumstances was I to let him out until he had fully awakened...he was sort of in a twilight by then and starting to come around...but he said cats made terrible noises and risked getting injured if they were let out before fully awakened....he was not kidding...and I would never again bring a cat home after anything that they had to be put under for...even if only a slight twilight or whatever!!
I hope you can get the ringworm under control...and watch for it on yourself...we discovered it was Tigger only after the kids kept getting ringworm and we could not figure out where from...we had recently gotten a new kitten, and I figured it was her, but she was clean...the vet asked if about Tigger and I said no way could it be him, he had not been outside in years...he said to bring him in anyways...
I could not believe it was Tigger, because he had not been outside in years!!....Come to find out, my step-daughter had spent the night at a friends...they had ringworm..she got it from them, Tigger liked to rub his head against us, picked it up from her, it multiplied on him, and he just kept sharing it around!!
