Something weird Belle does....question....msg

Post by Susan and the girls »

Belle has been doing something weird for a while, and I'm wondering if it's something I should be worried about.

Rob actually noticed it, and we've often found it quite humorous, but I can't help wondering if there's something else going on that's making her do this.

When we scratch her near the base of her tail sort of in the middle, she lifts her head to the sky and with her eyes closed, she starts making little smacking noises, like it's tickling her. But if you scratch her on the right side, she immediately begins licking/biting her right front paw, as though there's a flea or something tickling her paw. Of course, if Daisy or Scarlett happen to be in the way of her licking her paw, she licks them furiously. It's almost as if scratching on the right side of the base of her tail activates some licking/nibbling instinct! LOL

I have thought it was funny until the last few days. I've noticed she will continue licking or biting at her paw for the entire duration of the time I'm scratching her back - whether it's 10 seconds or 2 minutes. It worries me that there's some nerve irritation. Of course, my mind goes back to 2000, when my angel Lily was abused and her tail was injured so badly.... Could it be that her abuser also tried to hurt Belle, and it just wasn't as noticeable at the time???? Gosh, I'd feel horrible if Belle was injured, too!!!

What do you think? Her annual vet visit isn't until November, but you know I'm not beyond taking her in before then!

Thanks for any input.

Not to worry,..

Susan, from what you describe (and how descriptive I might add), it is simply a nerve response, nothing more. My Cassidy does exactly what you've described. Technically, what is happening is that whenever you stimulate a nerve, a signal sends a message to the brain and kitty feels or senses something. In this case, it is a message of comfort, content, or irritation. If she attacks (licks) her paw, the message is probably irritation. It doesn't mean that it hurts, it may only mean that she is irritated by that particluar type of touch.

In your case, because your cats are so weird, stop doing that to the one side and use the other side, LOL!!

Sals will get so into it she sometimes even falls over, LOL! Razzeratz isn't as sensative as Sals, but he weirds out too. Glad it's not something you relaly need to be concerned about Susan!
Kitty kisses,

Belle isn't weird...

Although none my current kitties react this way, Misty did as have many of my friends and family's kitties have. I don't know why some kitties do and some don't, but it's not uncommon.
