Heartworm :*(
Re: Heartworm :*(
Glad to hear he is doing a little better!
Usually, for upset tummies, we feed boiled hamburger or chicken mixed with rice. A little yogurt or cottage cheese might help also. You can make a big batch and freeze it in smaller portions. I'm surprised he didn't want the egg....maybe in a few days. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Well...today was not so good...he has not eaten anything...well, one piece of bread...and we had to coax his pills down by holding his mouth shut and rubbing his throat...
And it is getting colder, so I brought his blanket and food dish up to the vestibule, then went and got him...he started up the steps and fell...his hind end gave out...and he sat and refused to get up...hubby ended up carrying him up the steps and putting him in the vestibule ...
After about 5 minutes of sitting without wanting to move, he did go curl up on his blanket...
I know the vet said he will get worse before he begins to get better...I guess the "worse" has started...*sighs*...I am just glad I do not have to work again until Tuesday...I will be home all day every day to keep an eye on him and say lots of prayers over him...

Poor fella.....give him some hugs from us. I wonder if chicken soup goes for dogs, too.
Re: Heartworm :*(
Thanks...I will do that...I told him he has lots of people praying for him hoping he pulls through all of this...He keeps looking at me like he almost understands...

Thanks Joy...
I did take him some warm water a while ago and he stood up and wagged his tail while he drank it...he still has not eaten anything...and he has quite an assortment ti choose form in his food dish...pizza, bread with baked beans, plain bread, two different kinds of dog kibble...When I get to the store tomorrow I am getting him some yogurt and cottage cheese (okay, I do like them too!) and I have rice already, and a couple of chicken breasts...I have some ground beef already made up but it is seasoned with garlic and pepper...I am not sure how well that would go over with him right now...I will make up some tomorrow that has no seasoning in it...
Anything and everything as long as he will eat it...and as long as I can keep him quiet and in good health while he tries to get past this getting rid of the worm stage...
And I was reading online that the Immiticide that he got is made from arsenic?! I am sure that is doing a number on his entire body...no wonder the poor boy feels so badly
But the masseure I have been going to (he is awesome and I can move my head to both sides and up and down now without any pain!!) anyways...he is also a nutritionalist, and I asked if he did pets as well as humans and I told him about Blackfoot...he said the same things mentioned here, but to definitely get him the yogurt to counteract with the antibiotic he is getting...should I get flavoured or plain vanilla or no flavour?!

Tambrey....fair warning...don't rely on your human practitioners (a masseur wouldn't be considered a medical practitioner) for your pets' issues, least of all Blackfoot. Please, talk to your vet about dietary measures for him, if he's not interested in food, then your vet can recommend a temporary bland diet, or, can recommend a caloric intake diet if he feels Blackfoot is at risk for losing weight, etc. If it comes down to it, he can even prescribe an appetite stimulant.

Get the plain yogurt, if you can find it. I can only get it here in large cartons - why can't 'they' put some plain yogurt in at least the smaller size such as cottage cheese comes in - but for Blackfoot the more he would eat of it the better. If you cannot find any plain, what I've done for Winnie at times is the banana or custard.... once in desperation I fed her yogurt with peaches in it... she loved that, but all the matter with her was being in a snooty mood, not a real illness. I guess since Blackfoot is an outdoor fellow, he is not familiar with rare treat items like ice cream? Even so, he should like the cottage cheese... and it is a great tummy settler for dogs as well as for humans!
I know houses like yours very well - once lived in one, and it had a vestibule... tonight I'll be thinking of you and of Iowa winter coming on... keep your spirits up and try not to worry...

Well, I keep getting timed out... I can be at my computer so little any more, guess I don't pay attention to time spent as well as I should...
That was I, meandering on thinking I was real
I stick by what I said about the yogurt, though: too many top flight vets and people doctors, as well as valid petcare/childcare books, have advised 2 or 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt to replace "good bacteria" in a situation where the digestive system is or has been stressed... for me to think of this as untested or irregular treatment.

Re: Heartworm :*(
Just to reiterate so there's no confusion....it's probably fine to give yogurt, my point was not to rely on medical advice from (masseurs), because they are not licensed vets, and Blackfoot has been diagnosed with a serious condition, heartworm.
Looking at the whole picture, it's important he is eating sufficiently, with a diet that is interesting to him, and if feeding a variety of things isn't working, it could be a food aversion...in which another course of action should be discussed, before other problems occur.
While I agree tempting with whatever a pet will eat in a time of crisis is fine, if the food aversion is not resolved in a timely manner, and if that variety of foods is not nutrient rich, then he *can* develop an aversion, leading to dehydration amoung other problems. Sub-q fluids, or a bland diet or home-cooked equivalent veterinary diet, or even an appetite stimulant are all options that can be discussed with the vet. Even a veterinary diet on a temporary basis may be palatable to him (i.e., I/D for gastroinestinal upset, etc)
