A friend of mine - their dog has been diag. with possibly diabetes and maybe Cushings disease. The little guy- Jack- lives with my friend's mother and she will have to give him 2 shots of insulin/day. This is very rough on her- she adores Jack. Does anyone have any good info on this or alternative treatment methods to restore his health?
He is Honey's little boyfriend by mail. He's a handsome little Yorkie and means everything to her mother. They go back to vet tomorrow for results of the bloodwork and to get lesson on how to administer insulin. Pls hold a good thought for them...thanks so much.
Dog with diabetes, Cushings
Re: Dog with diabetes, Cushings
I would hesitate to comment on cushings unless/until the vet confirms.
Diabetes is relatively easy to manage, and the owner shouldn't be fearful. The injections are straightforward and simple, and she can have her vet/techs give her a hands-on training session that only takes minutes. She might also ask her vet for a client-handout sheet on diabetes, this is handy to keep nearby so she can reference it when she needs to. It will include a brief diagnotes section, insulin handling and administration, diagrams, and signs and symptoms to watch for in cases of hypo or hyperglycemic episodes.
The trick is getting the insulin initially regulated. Dietary approach is also part of the cornerstone in treatment. Have her ask her vet on how to properly store/handle the insulin, and make sure she has an adequate supply of needles on hand.
Her baby should adapt to this really well. Most dogs become adjusted to the injections and don't seem to mind them at all. The needles are so small, they barely cause a reaction from the dog. After she has administered insulin for the first few times, she should feel much more comfortable and confident and be less worried or apprehensive.
