Husky with epilepsy needs to calm down a bit..help?

Post by Moriko »

Hello!

Ok, I have 2 dogs, one of them is a 3 year old Husky. He is the sweetest thing and LOVES people to death and is so beautiful. BUT he has epilepsy and has to take 3 pheno pills twice a day to keep it under controll. He stays outside all the time..alone. It makes me so sad. But when I let him in he is CRAZY! He doesn't listen despite constant training. The only command it seems he can pick up is 'Sit'. He is SOOO hyper and if I don't keep a constant eye on him he will get into the cat litter box, steel food, get into the trash or mark the house. It is almost like either he doesn't care or that he just doesn't know better. Plus he is ver vocal. He talks and talks. And this would be fine...of course if he wasnt SOOO loud. Does anyone have any ideas on how he can be inside..and calm? I have tried training, but he doesnt seem to learn anything.

I know huskys are very active and stubborn, but this is crazy! Could it have something to do with his meds?

I would love to let him in with the reast of the family, so any help will be appreciated!
Thanks

Sounds like you need to find a professional trainer (I would advise private training, given your dog's condition). Also ask your vet if the phenobarb may need to be adjusted....you should be getting regular pheno-level testing done when this medication is given.

i go along with Traci, both the training and check with you vet about increasing the pheno--an increase might slow him down for a while and then you might reduce the dosage back to normal....but check with your vet....don take it upon yourself to do it.
