Hello, I am new here and just had a question...
Ok...I have a male cat. I am unsure of his age as I got him from the streets about 2 years ago. He is HUGEEE though so I am guessing he is pretty old, though not sure. Anyways...for the last year or so he sneezes...A LOT. And when he does....well...stuff comes out and flies all over the place. Not pretty. Sometimes it's so bad that he has to breath out of him mouth. I love him to death, and he loves to sleep on my chest at night, but as soon as he starts to sniffle he has to get off. Other than that he seems perfectly healyht. Next week I am taking him to get neutered and while I was there I was going to ask the vet what thay might think it is and what should be done. But untill then he is going to be staying inside. Ususlly he is ooutside everyday. He is a very loud talker and if he wants something, he lets you know!
Well....anyways..I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas and if anyone thinks there may be complications when he goes under anithesia.
By the way, I have 3 other cats who have NEVER been sick at all...so I dont think its contagious...
Any help is appreciated!

Re: New here...male kitty sneezy
Has he never been seen by your vet in the two years you've had him? If not, this is not good practice...you should always get a new kitty examined promptly before introducing them to your resident cats. Is he or any of your other cats vaccinated and current on those vaccinations?
Since he is allowed outdoors, the sneezing could be an allergy to anything in the environment (including the indoors). But there are several viruses that can also cause excessive sneezing. Older cats may develop nasal polyps that need to be treated effectively. Also, if he isn't vaccinated, he could be susceptible to any number of illnesses which can be transmitted to your other cats. Please keep them all Indoors ONLY.
Your vet needs to examine kitty, test him for FELV/FIV, and I strongly suggest a pre-surgical blood screen prior to the neuter to determine anesthesia candidacy. If he is suffering an upper respiratory virus, this should be treated and kitty must be generally healthy before any anesthetic procedure.

Re: New here...male kitty sneezy
Lets put it this way Cat+Constant Sneezing = BAD!!
This has happened to my Cat and I have found that the ONLY way to treat this is too go to the vet so that they can give you the powerful antibiotics. Once treated and cured they will give your kitty the shots it needs to be immune to dangerous diseases. It can get costly but it is sooo worth it for your kitty.
Make sure your cat is eating enough and getting plenty of water. When a cat's nose it stuffed up it won't be able to smell it's food and might not eat anything. While your waiting for your appoinment you can always go to the vet anytime and ask for a free syringe for your cat. You can use this syringe to feed it water and liquid foods like goat's milk or kitty formula.
Hope that helps and your kitty gets better

Re: New here...male kitty sneezy
He is eating GREAt and drinking. Like I said, other than the sneezes, he is fine. He plays and terrorizes the other cats and eats like a pig and drinks, so there are no worries about him not eating and drinking well. I believe he has allergies. But just to be sure I will be asking the vet when I go up there.
Do cats get allergies this bad?
Hmmm....

If you do take him to the vet, you can ask them how old he is. They can give you a pretty close approximation by checking his teeth.
I have a dog who sneezes alot. There is no reason for it except that we think it is his way of trying to talk to us. He does it when we are talking directly to him and asking questions....like, "are you a good boy?" or something like that. It's funny because he'll just keep sneezing as long as you keep talking to him in the same tone. Not that that has anything to do with your cat, just thought I'd mention it.
I also have outdoor cats and I can empathize with you possibly wanting to keep it that way. Just be sure that you do take them to the vet periodically, especially for a rabies shot, and an annual checkup. Good luck.

Re: New here...male kitty sneezy
You need to take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY... It could be nothing or it could be life threatening. I have had two cats die from fluid in the lungs and it all started with some harmless sneezing. I am not meaning to scare you - it could simply be allergies, but a cat sneezing can also be a VERY BAD SIGN!! Please be sure the vet listens to his lungs!! Good luck
