I've had my kitten for 2 weeks and one day now when I found him I figured him to be a week old (his eyes were not open yet) so I'm guessing he is now 3 weeks old. When do I start to try to litter box train him? And when do I stop making him go potty? A couple of times he has gone potty on his own.....but not in the past few days.
When do they start to go to the bathroom by themselves and when can I put a litter box out for him?
Thanks for your help.
Litter Box Training
Re: Litter Box Training
I always put them in the box as soon as I see that it is time,(sometimes when it wasn't) and then let them get out whenever. They have always picked it up from there. Good luck!

Yes, that's been my experience too. They train themselves if you just provide a clean litter box in a place that is easily accessible to them.

Re: Litter Box Training
Anytime they start to walk all over the place is a good time to litter train them.
At first your going to have to place kitty in the box yourself. By instinct they will relive themselves in the box if they have to go.
Make sure it's a shallow box so that kitty can climb in and out. Use the fine grained scoopable kitty litter, because kittens for some reason like to try to eat the big grained litter. It's best to put it in the same room that your kitten is usually in.
Oh and another thing. Pay attention to the kitty's cry. If it's crying like it want's food but has plenty of it, it's saying, "I gotta gooooo". Pick it up and take it to the kitty litter. After hearing it a couple of times, you'll notice the distinct meow it makes.
Good luck!

boxofmuses, actually it is clumping litter one should try to avoid with young kittens..since it is fine and clumps and can get matted in the fur (hence ingestion by grooming). Most kittens won't try to eat litter, but those who do, should have clay litter type in their litterboxes.
