My Doberman, Crystal, is nearly 8 mo. and about 78 lbs. I've been feeding her Iams Large Breed Puppy on the recommendation of the breeder.
She had a case of puppy pyoderma which never cleared up. The hair on her back had been thinning a bit and she had a dry flaky coat with some pustules. On the last visit, the vet said she has a staph infection and she's on Clavamox for the last week (which will continue for a month I believe). I already see an improvement in her coat and the pyoderma.
I'm wondering if this food isn't suitable for her, given her skin problems. Can anyone recommend a good quality, large breed puppy kibble. I'm afraid if I ask the vet he'll steer me toward Science Diet.

Re: Large Breed Puppy Food
just an opinion but i don;t think the food has anything to do with the pyoderma The food could cause allergies etc but i suspect you would have founfd that out a long time ago...i would not switch foods at this point because the change might, and a very slight might change her metabolism to not help the pyoderma...maybe change later but not now----just my opinion
Re: Large Breed Puppy Food
We always fed our Great Dane NutroMax for Large Breed Dogs...he seemed to do better when he was on that...when I was laid off and we had to go with a "cheaper" brand...we noticed his coat was not as shiny, and he just did not seem as well as when he was on the NutroMax...
Sooo...we adjusted our bueget to feed him what worked for him...
As davet stated, I would not make any changes at this time, get everything else stabalized and under control...then gradually change the food over to a brand you might like better and see how she does on that...

I kept her on the Iams, but have been adding a tiny bit of olive oil in her meals. In addition, once a week I scramble an egg and give it to her. I see an improvement in her coat but it could be due to the antibiotics.
I'm hoping this staph infection is a puppy thing and that she doesn't have skin issues her entire life. My last Doberman had all sorts of gastro issues to deal with in her 13 years. This one has a stomach like iron, but her skin is a mess.
