trying to clip Kobi's front claws ... any advice?

Post by kate & kobi »

I've been trying for over a month to cut Kobi's claws and am getting desperate - her nails are getting sooo long, and I'm gathering puncture wounds to prove it. :(

I've only cut her nails a few times since she came to us in February, but the last time was over a month ago. The first couple of times were really easy; I did it while she was almost asleep on my lap and she didn't mind a bit. But I think I hurt her once - I didn't clip the quick, but maybe pulled or twisted the nail while clipping it (?), and since then I haven't been able to clip them at all.

I don't know if this has anything to do with that episode, but she has become less of a lap cat and now won't stay on my lap long at all, much less fall asleep on my lap. She usually doesn't mind having her paws touched; I try to pet them when she's in a good mood. And she has a good scratching post and a cardboard scratching box, but that doesn't help enough.

Is there anything else I should try? Do I need to take her to a groomer to do it, or will she ever accept having me clip her nails again?

pillow case or canvas bag and just have one foot at a time sticking out while someone else holds the bags...they get over their "mad" quick once it is over.
