It's often associated with extreme stress, or can be hormonal (after spaying or neutering,or some other surgery - including teeth cleaning, after giving birth and weaning the pups, etc.)

Well, Nikki was spayed in June, but I would think her hormones are back to normal by now.

And the furballs I see strewn all over the yard and house are soft and poofy, but then again, so isn't all of her fur, whether it's attached or not.
