Traci,2 more kittens are sick
Traci,2 more kittens are sick
When I went to feed them this morning, the 2 girls didn't get up.The runt of the litter is limping and the other little girl seems to be exausted. The runt has a fever but the other one doesn't ,so far.The both still have good appetites and I will continue to offer canned food. Darla's fever has dropped a little more and she ate some dry food this morning. She didn't want canned and I will give her whatever she will eat.Im still forcing fluids.I gave them names.Kitten#1,the first one to get sick is Darla. The other 2 girls are Minnie Mouse (shes the runt) and Peach because she has a peach colored muzzle.
Re: Traci,2 more kittens are sick
Ann, can I ask how your vet ruled out distemper? Did he do a CBC or stool exams? Do any of the kittens have diarrhea?
Another thing to rule out would be coccidia...as well as toxo, salmonella or e-coli infection, stool exams would be helpful.
Have more pedialyte on hand, take temps regularly (at least 4 times a day), and call and ask your vet for amoxi or clavamox for all the kittens. Don't know what brand of kitten food you're feeding, but the A/D is a life-saver in that it is palatable, is an acute recovery diet, and most ill kittens and cats take to it really well. It can be mixed with water to form a soupy mixture as well.
Monitor for fever activity and notify your vet at once if any kittens' temp raises above 105 or is combined with severe lethargy. Can't stress that importance!

Thank you.Im feeding maximmun nutrition kitten dry and petsmart canned.I wont be able to get AD till monday.I cooked some chicken and will puree it for them. They will be 8 weeks old this Monday. What is a good amount of pedialyte to give them? The 2 boys are not showing any symptoms so far.
The ved did a fecal on Darla. He said its definately not distemper because she didn't show any symptoms of it.Our funds are extremely limited so no bloodwork was done.I will have to do the best I can with what I have and what I know.

I wouldn't feed any chicken right now in the event they may already be suffering from a bacterial infection. But, if it's all they would eat, it would be a temporary fix. Try to stick with the kitten food only. Is there no other vet in your area open/available to you that you can just pick up a few cans of A/D?
As for the pedialyte, call your vet or other vet in the area and tell them what brand/type you have, they can give you proper dosing info for kittens over the phone. The pedialyte is a good electrolytes replacement, but ideally, natural water intake is important as well. You can syringe feed water by putting the syringe in the corner of the mouth and delivering slowly so as not to aspirate.
