Garlic toxic to cats?
I just read that garlic was toxic to cats. I have been giving my cats 2 tabs a day(750mg) with their food to help with flea control. I do not believe in pesticides. Are they in danger? Please help!
I am copy/pasting this from the link you had on indoor fleas...
On a note about garlic use in animals...I have used it (straight garlic powder, NOT salt!) for years in my outside dogs food to repel flies...just a VERY small amount...not even a 1/4 teaspoon full for my labs...I also use vinegar (1TBSP. per 2 gallon jug of water) to repel fleas and ticks...I have not dealt with them for years in my dogs outside...
As for cats...I got these hints from my (former) sister-in-law, a retired animal nutritionalist/dietician at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, AZ...this is what they gave their "big cats" and other animals that tended to get fly bites on their ears and were bothered by insects to keep flies and fleas from bothering them...
I know the big cats are different from our domestics, and again, she used maybe a tablespoon or two per lion or tiger, depending on its size, and it was gradually worked into their food over the course of a couple weeks in very small amounts...so I would not recommend using it for domestics if that is the case, and it is definitely not worth finding out!!
I will see if I can contact her (remember, she is a former...I divorced her brother!) and find out more information on domestics vs big cats, as well as differences in garlic POWDER as opposed to the tablets...
As I mentioned above, she still only gave 2Tablespoons of powder for a lion or tiger...but I am not sure of the content of powder over the tablets...I would probably not give the tablets until more of an answer is found...
I am also searching on google
[(EDIT) I had this as a URL, but it was WAY too long...go to google and search as follows:
garlic cats toxicity -alternative]
but there are like 850 results to look through!! I did tell the search to omit finds with the word alternative, as I want actual facts and not theory, but some might have slipped through...
I too, am organic in the yard/garden and myself as much as possible, even though I usually use conventional meds and vets for my animals...there is just too much not known on the effects in animals...or what works for us is not good for them...but when I did have a concern, such as the fleas/flies/ticks and chemicals, and she gave me this advice, I figure that since she is an animal nutritionalist at the zoo, she does know what she is talking about...

Re: Garlic toxic to cats?
Garlic, garlic salt, garlic powder, garlic cloves...given in any amount can cause heinz body anemia. Why would you want to take that risk?
Garlic tablets are probably manufactured to contain minute amounts, however, one shouldn't place complete trust in a human dietary supplement for pets.
The fact of the matter is, there is NO conclusive scientific evidence that garlic repels fleas. It may if the owner applies large amounts (dogs), but will this keep fleas at bay? NO. Will it kill fleas? NO. Will it prevent fatal anemia if large amounts are ingested? NO.
Play it safe, use products recommended by your vet ONLY.
Tambrey, zoology, exotic medicine is quite different than small animal medicine. Big cats in zoos and sanctuaries are often fed raw meats, which ideally should be supplemented properly. Please do not post further on the use of garlic/amounts used in big cats/etc...as someone could seriously get the wrong idea and use it inappropriately, putting their cats at risk.
