kitten with deformity???

Post by Shaunam »

We have a six-week old kitten who since birth has had looser stools than the others and her whole genital area was pooched out. She was happy and gaining weight, though, so we didn't worry. She has been eating moist food for about a week now and has been trying to use the litterbox, but can't seem to have regular bowel movements. We noticed today that her poop is not coming out of her anus, but from where her urine comes from. The stools that she does manage to pass are very thin, like angel-hair speghetti. Right now, we are helping her pass the stools be pressing on her "pooch", which is painful.

Here's what I need to know:
Is there a surgery to help this kitten?
Is she better off being put down?

I know she is in pain and struggling and we just want what is best for her. We are trying to get an answer from the vet, but so far, no luck.

Sounds like an anal fistula...or similar deformity, where the anal opening is actually connected to the vaginal opening.

Yes, it can be surgically corrected, however, I strongly advise asking your vet to consult with and refer you to a specialized surgeon who has had experience with the surgical technique, it is a complicated surgery, but with a qualified and experienced vet surgeon, your kitten has an excellent chance at recovery.

I would suggest having your vet contact a feline internal medicine specialist at a veterinary university teaching hospital, as promptly as possible.

absoultely, please do as Traci has suggested and as soon as possible, she is obviously suffering and your vet needs to get on the phone or you will need to start making calls but in any event, don't wait and don't give up on her- usually, a good surgeon can help to work wonders with these sort of things.
In the meantime, please keep an eye on her as much as possible and be very careful and gentle in helping her to express stools and if you notice her in any worse discomfort (which is hard to guage from here) please seek emergency treatment for her.
Best of wishes and prayers too for this baby, hoping you can get some help for her soon,
D~
