Urine odor question...traci..davet??

Post by Tina B and crew »

I've just noticed the kittens urine having an unusual odor and I know odor can sometimes be indicitive of disease or infection. I don't quite know how to describe it, but it's almost gamey...or more like a barnyard animal's urine than cats. When I described the barnyard smell to my family they agreed that is what it reminded them of. Is this normal? I am taking them in to the vet tonight for their check up in prep for adoption...I will mention it to them, but is their anything I should suggest to them? Otherwise they seem fine, are eating well, bowels are working fine...I'm just not comfortable with that pungent smell of their urine :(

Thanks!

urine could be exceptionally alkaline but if you can::

take cotton and swab the urinary area and see if you can get a sample on the cotton then put in plastic bag...your vet may not be familiar with "barn yard odor", although most are..but try to get that moist swab ....could be low grade infection, could be a far out guess..

Could also be the food you're feeding. Not knowing what that is, follow Davet and opt for a urinalysis on at least one of them, K?

Traci...I thought about that too....but they've been eating the same food since they've been on solid food. Science Diet kitten..and the odor really just started in the past few days. They are also peeing on everything. I've raised quite a few foster litters and always have a few mishaps, but these guys and gals have seemed to go out of there way to pee where they aren't suppose to.
