warring cats
warring cats
My daughter moved home with her 2 cats a year ago and we have one cat. All are spayed and neutered. One male, 2 female. They are still peeing all over the basement on laundry etc., even on a shower curtain waiting to be washed. HELP!!!!!
Re: warring cats
all of your cats are urinating outside the litter box? what about their stool? when was the last vet visit for each? how is their temperment with each other? has anything changed recently? how long has this been going on?
Re: warring cats
2 have been to vet,1for hairballs,1 forclaw infection. My son has come home from abroad a couple weeks ago but it doesn't seem much worse, just thathe had more laundry lying around. I can't tell who is doing it. We did see the male cat do it once. Stool is not a problem. There is a box upstairs and one in the basement. The one downstairs is the electric kind.
The cat originally here hates the others. It has been goingon a while, months.

Re: warring cats
well, my first inclination would be to isolate the one you think is doing this to a room/location away from the others and see where this habit seems to follow. i would have a urinalysis peformed to rule out a uti before moving on with behavior techniques.
if it is the resident cat who hates the other two, it could be stress. the isolation of this one should help if thats the case and maybe a slower introduction could be done at that time.

Re: warring cats
Jason is right and please realize that stress is a major trigger not only in behavioral changes (ie inappropriate urination) but also real medical urinary problems, which can be especially dangerous in male cats.
Please try to find out which cats are doing this.
Keep the boxes as clean as you can, electronic or not. Add another box or 2, even if small and only temporary in the areas they are trying to go. Remove all laundry from places it shouldn't be - don't temp them
Separate the resident cats from the newcomers, and go very slow with the intros, give lots and lots of attention to them all but remember to reassure the resident cats separately that their territory is still theirs so to speak and into the others into it slowly as you reassure them that this is their home too, a hour, a day, whatever time they can be peaceful and calm together then separate again as needed. Give them toys and use interactive toys with the group of them (chasers, cat teasers, even old soft belts to chase that you swoosh across the floor, etc). and some cat nip and cat treats, make it as fun being together as possible.
Intros take time, not all cats are other cat kinda cats, they get set in their ways as do people. They need their space to go to that is safe. The resident cats have had a huge upset, the new kitties have also had a huge upset...this will take time but it can work out, it just may take a lot more human intervention and a lot of patience.
And please, take whatever kitties are having problem with urination, etc. to the Vet for check ups, there may be more going on and sometimes when one goes out side the box for medical or other reasons, others will follow and you really need to rule things out. Your Vet should also be able to help with behavioral issues and guide you on this or refer you to someone who can.
Hope things work out soon, it sounds like they are stressed and unhappy, as you must be be totally frustrated and the same....take a look around at the links, there are good ones on intros.
