My Jacks Kidneys

Post by Shelley's Jack »

I recently visited the vet. I dont have much experience with them so I was hoping to get your opinion. My cat is 8 years old and we had gone for a regular examination to make sure everything was okay. He palpitated my cats Kidneys and my cat meowed. He then ordered a blood test. I agreed to it as I obviously dont want anything wrong with my cat. It took him 30 minutes and he still could not take blood from him. So i said forget it. Now I have to bring him back and leave him there for the day. I am young and naive when it comes to these things, and honestly I dont know if they are trying to soak me. Obviously I am going to pay for him to be okay but I was wondering if anyone's cat meowed when the vet felt his Kidneys. Should I be concerened as much as I am now about my cats health?

Hi,

Your cat is of the age where he/she really does need to have blood work to rule out various diseases. One of the most common diseases in cats is kidney disease, but if you catch it and treat it early, your cat can have a good, long life. I feel for you..I had a cat who was quite a fighter. He did have renal (kidney) disease, so we had to have blood drawn periodically to follow his progress, and boy was that stressful! I hope that the vet will find that there is nothing wrong, and certainly try another vet if you are not comfortable, but it is absolutely normal for an 8 year old cat to have some blood work done. It is really a good idea.

Good luck, kk

I agree, it's really important for any cat over the age of 7 to get yearly exams and full blood profiling to monitor and catch common diseases such as kidney disease.

But, I don't understand why it took your vet 30 minutes to attempt a blood draw. With proper, gentle restraint, it only takes a few moments, the key is to cause as little stress to the patient as possible, yet have a quick and experienced hand in drawing blood. If you happened to witness this event trying to draw blood, and you were uncomfortable or your vet seemed inexperienced, don't hesitate to see a new vet right away. The most important thing is getting kitty evaluated with bloodwork to ensure that treatment is applied immediately should early kidney disease be detected. If your kitty truly cried out in pain during palpation of the kidneys, it is paramount the bloodwork is done immediately.
