Euthanasia - $25!!
My vet charged me $125 to put Shelby down just two months ago. He didn't even do it himself........the vet techs did it. He couldn't come in an hour early so he asked me if it was okay that they did it. Since she was suffering at the end, I wanted it to be done ASAP. I like his vet techs better than him anyway.

i think if i were a client i would have flipped my lid to not comply with your request if you were a long time client, and i am wondering (to myself ) if vet techs are allowed to do that---Traci---any thoughts???
Re: here is why this vet never drove a Porsche
I suppose it depends largely on the clinic's specific policies. Techs can be entrusted to handle euthanasias if the situation warrants, such as in Shelby's Mom's case. In an emergency, and if the tech is qualified, given permission by the attending vet, then ending suffering in a humane, compassionate environment would be preference of course.
I have performed a few....mostly on strays or exotics (an one incident with a house-mouse) whereby the ER vet could not make it to the clinic in a reasonable amount of time or was otherwise involved with another emergency outside of the clinic. I don't prefer it, but if it means suffering vs non-suffering, I would do as requested, and never without prior permission from the attending or on-call vet.

Traci...your house-mouse reminded me of our Teddy...he was a Teddy bear HAmpster that my son had for almost FIVE years...quite old for a hampster, I think...
anyways...Teddy got to where he could not climb his tube to his penthouse, or go to the other aquarium to play...then one day, he tried to walk across his main aquarium, and his left side did not work at all, poor thing...so I called the vet (the local farm vet) and he said to bring him in...He gave him a little shot to end his suffering, and we brought him home in a cardboard box...and the vet did not charge anything...he said for the small amount of drugs it took (compared to what he would have to use on a horse or cow!), it was not worth writing a check for...

Re: here is why this vet never drove a Porsche
The house mouse was not a pet....despite my protests, my boss decided to use sticky glue traps to catch mice around the clinic. If you've never seen these traps, they are horrid. After the incident, I gathered them all up and tossed them in his office...he never used them after that.

Re: here is why this vet never drove a Porsche
i think of all the kids rodent pets that i put to sleep (never charged as most vets didn't) but the kids would bring them in in their little future caskets and towells and toys etc...in fact with my kids alone we had something like 32 animals buried in our back yoar.
and re the sticky glue traps...i wrote to three local spcas complaining about them ..they all said it was outside their domain--hog wash they could have done somthing....to get them off the market

Re: here is why this vet never drove a Porsche
I HATE those sticky traps...they are horrid...when I worked at Lowe's and people would come in for mouse traps, I tried to sell them the "catch and release" traps...many people did give them a try at least...
I walked into our horticulture lab one Monday to find one trapped...it was so pitiful...it had fur ripped off from trying to get away, yet when it took a step, it got stuck elsewhere...Our instructor kept buying the things, and there were a few times, when I found them, that I would throw them away, unused
Of course, being the assistant, I had access to more places than others did, or at least could get in there before regular hours...she never did catch on as to where the traps disappeared to...
