New kittens question

Post by Wooby »

My cat recently had kittens last week (thanks to a roommate leaving the door open before I got her fixed), but regardless, there's 5 kittens now.

It's day 11, should I be worried that one still has it's dried up umbilical cord? What should I do?

How long should I wait before I'm worried regarding each of them opening their eyes (one has already, 2 look like they're going to soon, kinda half-opened).

Are kittens really photosensitive? If they are how long do I have to keep a blanket on/lights off?

Thanks!

Check the kitten with the umbilicord cord attached...make sure there is no swelling or bruising near the abdomen. If so, get him seen by your vet. It should fall off on it's own by now, give it another day or two, but also make sure the other kittens are not pulling or tugging at it.

Eyes should open within 7-14 days after birth. If they don't by day 14, might want to get them checked to make sure an upper respiratory infection is not developing that can prohibit the eyes from opening.

Kittens are no more photosensitive than adult cats, unless they are white coated or albino. What is it, or what is it about their environment you're concerned with regarding photosensitivity?

Thanks for the info.
It's nothing I'm worried about, I just want to turn my lights back on :)
I heard from someone that you have to keep them in a kinda dark environment, for how long I didn't know.
So it doesn't really matter at all? Should I wait until their eyes are all open?
As for the umbilical cord, seems like there's no bruising, no visible swelling that I can see, and the area doesn't seem uncomfortable to the kitten at all. I'll wait a bit and see what happens.
