Feline Urinary Blockage

Post by Guest »

My kitty just came home from the vet after having a urinary blockage. He's got special food and all kinds of meds and such. This is the second one in about 7 months. I'm really worried that it'll happen again and he'll need surgery. Has anyone had the same situation? Are there any homeopathic preventative things that i can do for him after all of his meds are finished to prevent it from happening again. They said he had Struvic (sp) crystals in his urine but no stones or kidney damage thankfully. I want him to be ok, I'm so sad.

Sorry, but in my opinion, homeopathic remedies are worthless, and a waste of time and money. Listen to your vet, he knows what he's doing.

Struvites can be managed and potentially dissolved with correct dietary approach (prescription diet) and careful attention to his urine pH levels, as well as followup urinalyses. If however, your vet's dietary approach does not yield results, and if kitty again develops a blockage, you might want to discuss with your vet the possibility of a perineal urethrostomy, but I would suggest a contrast cystography with a feline specialist before ever considering surgery.

Follow your vets instructions explicitly, don't feed anything outside of the prescription diet, do not add supplements or acidifiers to the diet (unless under strict direction and supervision of your vet, followup as your vet advises, and if any common symptoms occur that signal another blockage, don't waste time, get kitty back to your vet or ER vet immediately.

Hi Lolita,

I hope all works out with your kitty. I know you are very worried. Please do follow the diet strictly that has been prescribed by your vet. The struvite crystals are the easier type of crystals to manage through diet.
The surgery is only done as a last resort.

My Smokey had an emergency perineal urethrostomy in January 2003. His situation was a bit different as he only had one previous UTI many years before he blocked in January. Fortunately, he is doing well in that area but I only do feed him prescription food and treats are off limits.

I hope your furbaby and you feel better soon..
