My chihuahua has just gone through patellar sugery on both knees. He is 1 1/2 years old. Since the surgery, when he wakes up, his penis is extremely engorged. I obviously understand that this is a natural thing, but there are 2 reasons why this is worrying me. First, this didnt happen (on this level) before the surgery, and second, it seems to be bothering him. When I come home from work it is 'out' and AT LEAST the size of my index finger (Tyler is only 6 lbs). When this happens, he will try to walk, but just ends up standing there looking at me to do something. I dont mean to get gross, but it also looks very weird. It has obviously dried up while he was sleeping and looks like your finger tips would if you had falled asleep in the bathtub. When it is trying to go back 'in', it doesnt seem to happen very easily. I've tried putting water on it to lubricate it, but it doesnt really help.
Is Tyler just well endowed that way and I should stop worrying? Or should I talk to my vet about this? He is going back for his 2 week follow up soon, but it would be nice if someone could give me their insight.
Thanks.
Crazy question ...
Re: Crazy question ...
Is he urinating normally, and are you taking him out to do so or are you using puppy piddle pads for now? If the latter, be sure the pads are changed on a frequent basis to prevent urine scalding and be sure to clean his fur, etc. If the former, maybe try to help him outside for potty duty a bit more often.
He could also be self-inflicting himself due to inactivity/confinement, might want to talk to your vet about it, he can give you an ointment to use temporarily until he is up and about more and healing.
