To spay or not to spay?

I'm sorry - there's probably innumerable topics concerning this issue, but I still wanted to start my own.

Here's the story:

My mom brought home a stray white chow-mix 3 years ago; she picked it right up off the street. We've had Nikki ever since. But lately she's decided to take her sweet time peeing during her walks, or she won't pee at all. My mom and I would walk her every hour but many times she just wouldn't go; I know when she's picked up she goes, so sometimes I would just lift up her back legs and out it would come. She isn't too crazy about that but sometimes it's the only way I can get her to go.

Now my mom is talking about getting her spayed. She says that Nikki licks herself so frequently down in that region that she "can't go potty", which I find hard to believe. She says that spaying will correct this problem.

Is that true? Will getting Nikki spayed get her to go potty better? I've never heard of this, but then again most of the time my mom has no idea what she's talking about...

spaying is a good idea but i don't think it has nything to do with this problems....this is a urinary tract problems and could even be bladder stones....get her check soon cause if this is urinary idelay could lead to biger problems

I agree with Skeptic and davet. Defiantly spay her. There are enough unwanted puppies in the world. My girl is spayed but still gets urinary tract infections. I give her a cranberry capsule with her food. That seems to keep her bladder happy. I give them every day whether she has an infection or not.

There is also an anatomical condition having to do with misformation of the canine vulva - can't recall the exact term but davet will know - which is correctable with relatively minor surgery. My GSD's vet explained this to me a few years ago and the condition/procedure was also discussed on an Acme board.

But the important thing is getting this dog to a vet, pronto [that's Texas Espanol for ASAP ] Plus I agree with Amanda's Mom: have the pupper spayed anyway... Defiantly indeed if necessary [AM, I'm convinced Spellcheck has a sense of humor sometimes ]

Puppies isn't really the reason why Nikki is getting spayed; she stays indoors with the exception of walks, and she's never in contact with other dogs, so she can't get pregnant...although she took a ride on my cat ROlly once before and he got all scared and confused hahaha

But someone told my mom that having the dog spayed will get her to urinate more, easier, better, etc.

Well the dog is going to the vet's next week for shots and then returning the week after for the spaying (I'll probably be the lucky one to keep her from biting and ripping apart the other pets, owners, and doctor). I'm sure my mom will bring up the matter with the vet and they might suggest an exam to see what is wrong with Nikki. My mom would probably refuse it because we don't have much money for pet costs, but the thought's there, right?
