litter preference

i know this has been asked at least once or twice on the "old board", but i was curious what others have tried and what you now use....and why.

feel free to list some history, i currently use fresh step scoopable and they like it but curious if it's "the best".

I use to use plain clay...then switched to scoopable...exquisicat to be precise...then started using Tidy Cat...not scoopable...CatAttract....Yesterdays News....Papurr....then switched to beet pulp...then rabbit food......S'weatscoop...finally went to Feline Pine in the majority of the boxes that are in the garage and the crystal (not the mix...the pure crystal) litter in the boxes that are in the house.

Why did I quit using clay? Didn't like the dust or the smell. Scoopable? Hated cleaning out the boxes..it stuck to the bottom...and didn't like the smell....catattract? too expensive. Yesterdays News and Papurr? Didn't soak up the urine. Beet pulp...was really absorbant and the smell wasn't bad..but it made my house smell like a barn

Rabbit food...same as beet pulp...sweatscoop....stuck to the bottom and started smelling awful if it wasn't changed daily. So far the Feline Pine and the crystal work best in controlling odors. And all my cats are fine with using either of them...except Frodo. Frodo has to be picky...she doesn't like litter period. Only shredded newspaper, which didn't controll the odor well...so I started using puppy training pads with folded newspaper on top...she uses those fine

Only tidycat here, both clay and scoopable. Only a couple of my cats will tolerate scoopable. I have enough cats that dust is not a problem

Presently using Swheatscoop....I'm not finding it smelling at all here and it lasts although it does stick and clump like a rock and is quite expensive (I do scoop many times a day though)....I had to give up on clay, it was just getting too stinky quickly and dusty no matter what brand I tried.
Personally, I hate them all

and I don't think the perfect litter has yet to be invented....and think I've tried just about every form of litter out there except for the Pine which I'm not too sure about... If I could train them to use the toilet I'd be one happy woman (but I'm not totally insane enough to try that ...yet anyway)

Clay isn't really scoopable, but in my opinion, works better and longer than scoopable. I think the latter is just messy, but that could be due to the number of cats I have. For two cats only, I would say about 4-5 days, providing you scoop the waste on a daily basis.

Yep me too!!

Jason...I keep most of them in the inclosed garage...that is where the cats are accustomed to going. But I keep one or two in the house...Willow has a covered box in here, because...well because...hmmmm...I don't know why?? Probably because when we fostered her she had a box in here to keep her from going out into our cat's boxes...and it just stayed. I also keep on for the bedroom when I have to seperate the cats when we go out...you know to keep Gizmo from bullying Willow and Frodo while we are gone

many years ago. Switched to scoopable (vet office brand: EverClean, then store brands). I have multiple cats (!) so the regular clay was just not getting it anymore. Had to go to scoopable as our population numbers rose.

We've found that the scoopable clay-type stuff nowadays either has too much perfume or dust or both (Fresh Step, Tidy Cat Scoopable, Wal Mart Brand, etc.) With 7 litter boxes in the house, 8 in the garage and 7 in the barn it was just too much dust to inhale, and perfume sends me running to my inhaler. Our supermarket has just begun selling S'wheatScoop and we're trying that. So far, so good but is pricey. Haven't tried FelinePine yet.

I, too, wish someone would invent the perfect litter. *sigh*
