I adopted a cat a little over a month ago. This is the first cat I've ever owned so I'm slowly learning what I need to know. I took him to the vet two weeks ago for his rabies, feline lukemia, and feline distemper vaccinations. He got home and was a little sluggish but was fine that night when I got off work. I brought him back for his second round of shots today and he laid on the bed and slept the entire afternoon while I was home and I found him in the same spot when I came home from work. He was whining and wouldn't really move and just cried the whole time I was holding him. I put him back down and he crawled to a pile of clothes on the floor and has been laying there since. I know vaccines can make animales kind of groggy and miserable, but this seems really bad. Can someone let me know if this is normal or if I should take him back to the vet first thing in the morning?
Thanks!
sick from vaccinations?
Re: sick from vaccinations?
that is a little unusual, ie that sever a reaction....assuming there is no vaccine infection then in reality this is a good thing, means the body is building up antibodies to the vaccine but again this is a little sever...call the vet tomorrow because he/she will know exactly what typoe vaccine was given and if it has caused that typoe reaction before...but if all is well tomorrow than you cat will have good resistance....but won[t hurt to call in am
Re: sick from vaccinations?
Hi,
I agree with davet..this is a bit extreme. Please call your vet tomorrow if kitty is not better, and see if they can see him. There can be some very serious vaccine reactions, although they are rare. Is your cat an indoor cat? Then perhaps you should consider not giving feline leukemia in the future. If outdoor (which is not a good idea!), then it is a good idea. Also, you might want to consider having only one vaccine to be given at a time. This is a lot of stuff for a kitty immune system to process at one time. In addition, vaccines used to be given mostly in the scruff, but because of certain complications, rabies and FELV (feleuk) are given in the right and left rear legs. Your cat may be extremely sore from this. I hope so much that your baby will be better tomorrow.
Oh, and you don't own kitty, kitty owns you!
Let us know how things go...kk
