a couple of weeks ago, my girlfriend and i got home and our one year old male had died very recently. it was really brutal--i gave him cpr for a while.
the real problem is that i got 2 cats who were brother and sister for a reason. i am in law school and my girlfriend works, and we are only home in the evening. the two of them could keep each other entertained for days.
now i feel SO bad for her, because she is alone all day. she is so good (surprizingly). she doesnt tear any thing up and she has been eating well. she is a very energetic cat and we play with a string and make her run around like crazy, but when we stop she meows like crazy for a while.
my question is this: how long should we wait before introducing another kitty into this poor cats life? not that we are ready, ourselves, the cat that died was without a doubt the coolest cat i have ever met, but soon enough we are going to.
i have heard that getting a kitten would be better, because she would not be threatened by it and her motherly instincts would kick in. this summer i will be around and will be able to raise a kitten.
any advice would be very welcome.
thanks!

your cat will get over its lonliness in time, might take a few months but cats are very adaptable....another cat would be nice but not really necessary..but if your not hot to trot for another cat then give her time...cats are survivors...

I can tell you that I'm a firm believer in a two-cat household. As you've seen, 2 cats entertain themselves, and keep eachother happy when "Mom & Dad" are at work. I've heard from friends that the intoduction of a new cat can be difficult for a few days - but, worth it in the longrun. They become buds in a matter of no time. I don't know how your cat died without warning... but, if you know you're a responsible 'parent' - consider adopting a sibling soon.
