Cancer - 13yr old Dalmation
Cancer - 13yr old Dalmation
Just found out that my 13yr old dalmation has cancer. Over the last few months she has developed lumps (from BB size to the size of a pea) all over her skin - Not just a few lumps - 100's
The vet said that it is a cancer after taking samples for a biopsy. (a Sarcoma) She is still a very happy dog - I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on treatment or the lack of since the dog is so old.
Thanks

No ideas about treatment, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear this I wish someone would tell all of our dogs that they can't get any older; that would keep our Mr. Blue an always-youthful (OK, middle-aged) 6 1/2!

Don, so very sorry to hear about your best friend's diagnosis. I lost my Mack to bladder cancer in June of 2003.
I found a wonderful site for those of us who are going through or have gone through this horrible disease with their pets.
Here is the link. it is a wonderful place with lots of knowledgeable and caring people. Lots of prayers coming your way.

i usually become a smart alec and post something at times like this on when to decide to make the final decision...if it comes to that just post on here that you are wondering about making that final decision, i am sure there are lots of copies of it out and it does help in times like this...at this point i think you will know what to do as far as treatment and unlike people you don't have to let pets linger in pain like humans....good luck

Under the search engine www.google.com enter the word Oncolyn. Said to be a cure for cancer- numerous articles. Also Shark cartilage (9,000 mg daily for a human adjust dosage accordingly) combined with shark liver oil- said by numerous holistic vets in various books to be very cdurative for cancr. Each one says- get the best quality you can get. Also check out Essiac Tea and also The Hoxsey Formula- both available at health food stores- check them out as a search wordunder the above search engine as to their effect on cancers.

If this stuff really worked as proven by double blind tests, then the drug companies would be marketing it like crazy and all the doctors would be pushing it. Unfortunately, this is just another scam to remove desparate people from thier money. There have been several studies that have shown Shark cartilage has no beneficial effect on cancer, which should be understandable since it is based on the bogus claim that sharks do not get cancer. I have caught sharks with huge cancerous tumors on and in their bodies in the Gulf of Mexico. On spectacular example was given to the Biology department of the University of New Orleans, where to the best of my knowledge it remains til this day.connect..the..dots wrote:Under the search engine www.google.com enter the word Oncolyn. My advice when hearing of these things is to apply the test that the Philosopher Hume designated. When told of these incredible claims ask yourself which is more likely
A: That the claims are true.
B: That someone was decieved or
C: That someone is trying to deceive.
Also remember that Incredible Claims require Incredible evidence. Testimonials are not evidence. Repeatable, double blind tests are.

Re: Cancer - 13yr old Dalmation
May I offer my deepest condolences. I have lost dogs to this terrible disease and I know the heartache involved. As long as your dog is happy and free of pain, love her and enjoy your time together as much as possible. Take lots of pictures and take her for fun rides and walks. Remember this poem. ..Don wrote:Just found out that my 13yr old dalmation has cancer. IF IT SHOULD BE
Author unknown
If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.
We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer. So,
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend.
Only -- stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know, in time, you, too, will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve it should be you.
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years......
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

people can always make their own choices but i, and being a vet, heartedly condem the vets that are perscribing shark cartgilage...i will be 3willing to bet the 90 percent of the shark medications that are perscribed are sold by the vet..i have never seen one double blind or even an invetigative paper on the ability of shark cartilage doing anything, for cancer, arthritis or cartilage disease...i would love to see one, just one undiased double blind study...have tried for uyears to find a reputable one....we, my emergence group, and our local vet associations went through the trials and errors of the stuff and years agoknbocked it out of any medical or therapeutic use...and i am talkin in our local group about 30 vets...which is a small amount but 100% of our group
Re: Cancer - 13yr old Dalmation
here is just one of many many comments onn shark cartilage from the human point of view
3) Remember that numerous studies have shown that one-third of patients will feel better in any six month period no matter what medication they are taking. The person who swears to you that a special diet made them get better isn't crazy or lying; they may very well have gotten better at that time, but that doesn't mean anything about your case.
If you can afford to take harmless supplements and they make you feel better, that's great. We all want to feel we are doing everything possible. However, when you spend $100 on a bottle of shark cartilage, are you throwing away money that you need for something else?? If there was an alternative medicine that worked for people with arthritis, every one of us would be happy to recommend it.
and opharmaceutical companies would be prodicing and sellling it by the ton
