I guess the Pedigree food contains 50% protein! That seems awfully high to me, but I sure don't know. I would never start Mr. Blue on a diet that high in protein without checking with our vets! I think I'l;l stick with the current plan of trying to treat him with more carrots and less biscuits!
Here's a story that mentions an Atkins-like diet for dogs

course you know what happened to Atkins...actually his diet had nothig to do with his death...it was a disrelated cardiac problem but...that counds pretty hight to me also..i still am of the old school and i know this is not acceptable in this day and age but i used to tell clients to go to the grocery store, pick out a small bag of a big named bnrand, ie purina, gaines etc. and try it with there gdog..if he liked it and had no problems keep him onit...this does not pertain to cardia, nephritic, adipose and other dogs but the plain old dawg...my patients lived pretty good normal live on thes3e foods...they, the foods, did not keep them from getting htit by cars orseasonal allegires or cat bites etc but just normal living...and 50% might not do pre pancreatic or pre kidney problem dogs..

My dogs get a cup of 26/18 kibble, a good half cup of ground meat(chicken, liver, trout, egg) , a chunk of beef fat from the abbatoir, and half a cooked duck egg. I`m probably over the 50 % protein mark, but have never had a problem. Some dogs jump too fast and get an extra chunk of beef fat, or egg. They vary from 45 to 65 pounds, and some even have to get a bit less kibble for weight control. oops - didn`t sign in
