plant toxic or not?

Post by cwmack »

Hello,

I have searched this site's very helpful plant database and several others that I've found on the Internet but still can't find an answer to my question, so thought I'd post in case there are any botanists lurking who can help.

A friend has given me a houseplant, which after much searching I've figured out is red ginger (Alpinia purpurata is the scientific name, it is not the same as wild ginger). Now I'm trying to figure out whether it's toxic to my plant-loving kitty. I'm keeping it well out of reach for the moment but need to find out if I should find it a new home.

If anyone knows the answer, I'd be very grateful!

thanks,
C.

I know you said it's not wild ginger, could it be red ginger? Does it look like this: http://www.acclaimimages.com/_gallery/_ ... -1603.html

I live in Hawaii and we have these growing everywhere. Here is a site with really good toxic plant and flower info, maybe you can find something here:

Yes, I think it is red ginger -- thanks for the list of toxic plants. It doesn't list it as toxic -- but then, I still can't find any information that suggests it isn't, either. Anyone know for sure?
