Post by Leo the cat »

I hope some one can help me.
This morning my can run away while I left the door open for cleaning. He is strickly in door cat and I had him for 5 mos. I'm very sad and keep looking for him. Any suggestions what to do, how to get him back. I'm hoping that he will remeber the house and come back.

Traci,
Thank you very much for the article.
Last night at 11:45, I went out, called Leos name and shook his food container, finally he answered me.It took me 15 min. to get him inside.
This time I was very lucky and hope that it won't happen again.
My 9 year old fall a sleep crying. He was missing his cat.
I checked him for cuts and bruses. He was fine except dirty paws. After cleaning. he ate and drunk some water. Leo was gone for 15 hours.
My way of getting him back was very similer to this article. It worked.
I also let my door open during the day and called his name contiously.
It is great to have Leo back. I have 2 other cats and you should have seen how happy they were when they saw Leo.
Thanks guys,
:D

Xander, this is a very fortunate outcome for you...I'm so happy your kitty came back so quickly and no harm done. However, if by chance he was not, or is not current on his vaccinations, I would suggest getting those done to ensure he is safely protected, immediately. 15 hours is along time for nearly anything to happen.

Hello Tracy,

Leo is up to date w/his vaccinations. However, do you feel he sould be checked out by his vet or tested again for feline hiv? He had no cuts or bruses. He was hiding next door at my neighboors yard where they have alot of cars!!!
Your suggestion is highly appriciated.

to offer my own suggestion, i would think to simply watch him like a hawk for a while and keep to your annual visits and shots. having him checked right now would of course be the most thorough approach but im not so sure its warranted. when is his next annual visit?

Hello Jason,

Leos annual check-up will be on 7/11/04.
What should I look for? What would be the dangers of being outdoor for 15 hours?
Thanks,
Xander

You can do a quick exam on your own if comfortable with it. Simply run your hands through his fur (everywhere), checking for bumps, wounds, etc, paying special attention to his abdomen area and all four limbs (most likely areas for bites). If he had suffered a mishap outside, more than likely he'd be showing direct signs of an injury about now, such as an open wound, limping, sore, lethargic, vomiting, etc.......any of which could indicate a fall, stuck in something, hit by car, bite, getting into a toxic chemical or plant etc.

Just watch him as Jason suggests, if anything unusual occurs, any sudden developing signs of illness, get him to your vet right away. Chances are he will be just fine, but do watch him closely for unusual symptoms in the next week or two.
