my cat has diarrhea what should i do to help him?

I was out all day on saturday and got home at 4:00p.m. and let my cat out,ten,and he took a stool.He came in and about 5min. later he went on the carpet. So i was mad at him but then 60-90min. later he started meowing over and over really loud.so i went over there and put him in the garage because i knew what he was going to do.and he did but this time in his litter box. if you pick him up he allways yelps and you know it hurts.i dont want to take him to the vet so what should i give him and what sholud i do for him.also what shouldnt i do

I'm sorry, but my opinion is to take him to the vet ASAP.

Sounds like you really should take him to the vet . . . sounds like he's in pain, may be serious.

If you want to stop the diarrhea, I suggest feeding your cat PLAIN Yogurt. It stops them from having diarrhea.

But like I said, it sounds serious. There may be a major underlying problem. I wouldn't risk it.

why would you not want to take him to the vet? clearly there is problem and the chances that its health related and wont go away on its on are not only high but near certain.

forget the "home remedies" at this point, please call a vet and clearly describe all details to them so you can been quickly. you would be rolling the dice and given the apparent pain, its best to not.

I don't mean to sound rude, but you should give him to someone who will take care of him and take him to the vet. If you don't want to take proper care of pets, then you don't need any.

My neighbor had a beautiful calico that they never took care of. We would feed and water her and so many times I wanted to just take her in and care for her, but I didn't.

Well, my husband has to scrape her organs off of the road a couple of weeks ago, because someone hit her with a car! What a horrible day that was. I saw her when I went to check the mail.

The neighbors haven't even asked if we have seen her lately! My husband gave her a proper burial!

that's a sad lesson for keeping the cat indoors and while the owners may not of learned anything from it, perhaps people reading this will. i know people with similar stories and am glad i dont carry a story like that myself.

i thank you and your husband for at least attempting to give her some additional nurishment and respecting her enough to bury with dignity. it takes little effort to care less.

now, for the original poster....how is your cat doing? has your cat been to a vet?

During the span of the years, I've had many cats. They all used to be indoor/outdoor. Two of my cats died because they got hit by a car, one I even saw it happen. The others disappeared eventually, meaning they most likely either got lost or got killed by something. (And no I don't even live in a city with busy streets, I live in a rural area) Ever since then I've kept mine inside. It's just too dangerous. You might think that cats need to be outside because they enjoy it, but if you provide them with toys and enough things to do inside, they'll be just fine and be happy. You can even take cats for walks. And indoor cats usually live a lot longer lives as well. They can't get hit by cars, and they can't pick up common diseases/viruses that many wild cats carry.

For the not wanting to take them to the vet thing, how could you not want to? It's obvious you care because you took the time to come here and seek help. If money is a problem, I can understand that though, because I have the same problem myself. Try to work out payment plans or something, though. Even look up low cost vets. (I found a place where I can get mine vaccinated and spayed and examined for less than $20 a cat) (If money is the case) If money isn't the case though, you really should take yours to the vet. There could be several different health problems causing the loose stools, and it's always better to be safe than sorry. It could have just been something it ate outside or something, but if it persists, that's likely not the case.
