My Doberman is currently on Baytril for a UTI. During the night, she emptied her entire bladder while sleeping. The urine appeared light in color and she apparently had no idea what happened. She was sleeping in soaking wet blankets.
She's 12-1/2 and now I'm wondering whether she doesn't have UTI but starting to show signs of failing kidneys.
To complicate matters, my mother in law was supposed to watch her in a week while we take a 25th anniversary cruise. I can't leave a sick dog with her.
In the morning she appeared ill, but by afternoon was playing with her toys like any other day.
I waited at home all day for the vet to call, but he never did. She just saw him on Sat. but he was very rushed and barely spent 5 minutes with her.

Re: Signs of Kidney Failure?
Has she had bloodwork done recently? What was the specific gravity from her urinalysis? Did they culture it as well?

Re: Signs of Kidney Failure?
One night a couple years ago, when she was about 5, I had given `Eowyn Benadryl because I wanted her to stay quiet (I forget now why, though know there was a valid reason... seems maybe it was after she had a benign cyst removed...) Anyway, that night she wet her bed... Scared me silly; first and only time it ever happened - this dog was completely house trained by age 8 weeks and has never had problems. The consensus of expert opinion on the Acme GSD board was that the medication on this one occasion (Win has had Benadryl many times) caused a sleep so deep, she relaxed too completely... Thus, I wonder if the same thing happened with your Dobie... the meds let her be so comfortable, she just slept through the signal? I'm no expert, of course, but it doesn't sound like a kidney problem to me... but more like a consequence of the bladder trouble...

I made another appointment for Sat. to have bloodwork done. I wanted him to do a thorough exam last Sat. but he was completely rushed with a full waiting room. I knew when I left his office that he should have done more tests on her. I was told the urinalysis was neg. but a culture was not done.

Thank you, Mompaws. Today, Shelby seems back to her old self. She's eating and playing. I'm hoping that tomorow's blood work will shed some light.
I'm also going to speak to the vet about a low protein diet. This dog continues to amaze me. She has bounced back so many times from different illnesses.

Interesting - I think the only time Angel has wet the bed was while she was on Baytril. Has anyone else seen this when their dog was being treated?
