Heartguard and vomiting.

Post by Nancy (Spuddie' s Mum) »

I have noticed over the last several months that my little Papillion, Tuffy, vomits a few hours after she has had her Heartguard cube. I am wondering if she could be sensitive to the wormer that's in the cubes, but I'm not sure it's something I should be concerned about. She seems sensitive to other things as well, for instance I can't use any tick repellant on her (like Advantix, or Frontline), I can only seem to use Advantage which has no tick repellant in it. So I am hoping she is not developing an intollerance to something in the Heartguard. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You would have to do a process of elimination to determine the sensitivity of the heartgaurd tablet. If you've never given with food, try giving it with a bite or two of food, or breaking it up with the food (recommended anyway). You can also try giving it within an hour after a meal. If she vomits then, you could maybe reasonably assume she is having a reaction and you then want to talk to your vet about alternates.

You mentioned she is sensitive to other things, but only mentioned topical applications....does she vomit her regular food at any time? Does she vomit when given treats or other foods?

Generally I give the Heartguard with their breakfast dog cookies so she is getting it with some food. She actually won't eat them on their own so I mash it up in some Cheese Wiz for her. She is not a "pukie" dog and she almost never throws up at any other time, just seems to be the day she gets the Heartguard cube.
