Phantom Pregnancy??

Post by Nephtis »

Hi, Im looking for a bit of advice. I was given a 10 mth old cat just before christmas. I'm apparently her 4th family. I was told she had been neutered. At this moment in time she looks very pregnant. Swollen belly and nipples, although I can't feel any lumps in her belly.

She has become very quiet and doesn't want to go out, but still eating well. I assumed OK we have a pregnancy, but someone suggested a neutered cat can have a phantom pregnancy. I have had cats all my life and have never come across this before. I wondered if there is any way of telling? Or do you think my best bet would be to a visit the vet.

Both dogs and cats can experience "false" pregnancy, although in cats, it is extremely rare.

Get your kitty to your vet immediately...only he can tell you if she is in fact spayed....or if in fact a health condition is surfacing that may have nothing to do with pregnancy. If the previous owner said she was spayed, they should have been able to produce a vet record or gave you the vet's name and clinic who performed the spay.

folow Tracis advise toot sweet .I have never seen a case of false pregnancy in a spayed cat unless a portion of an ovary was left in or no spaying at all...if she is truly acting like a false preg...it could be some other entirly different endocrine order..

Thanx to everyone who responded to my posting. Had my cat to the vets this morning and she is most definately pregnant. Vet said her milk is in so she is close to the end.

She doesnt seem to be able to settle this morning, prowling the house and mewing. I have made up a box as the vet instructed, but she's not the least bit interested.. She keeps going behind the TV.. I suppose she will find her own place.

Thanx again :)
