Help with Cat food

Post by Raina »

Hi, I posted a message on here about a week ago (General Help Request). I am planning to take them to the vet as soon as I have the money in regards to getting them spayed, vaccinated, and about their health problems. I was wondering though, if anyone could give me any suggestions on a type of cat food that is nice, but not too expensive. I currently am feeding them Home Harvest dry cat food (which is just an off-brand grocery store brand) but I'd like to switch to something that is more benificial to them. Home Harvest has not less than 30.0% crude protein, not less than 9.0% crude fat, not more than 4.5.0% crude fiber, and not more than 12.0% moisture. Any suggestions on brands or just what to look for in content? I'm definitely willing to spend more for better food for them, but it can't be TOO expensive, either.

Another thing I would like some suggestions on is litter. I've used 2 different types of litter before (Tidy Cats immediate odor control and Litter Clean). I don't really like Tidy Cats, personally, because it doesn't seem to control odor really well, in my opinion, and it didn't clump up moisture, thus a lot of litter was wasted. Litter Clean was excellent, it controlled the odor very nicely and clumped up moisture, but it was also very expensive.

Thanks,
Raina

for food, i would only recommend science diet....that comes from "live and learn" trials of my own. if you work out the math, per day is not that much more expensive...at least not on my calculator ;).

for litter, ive tried most of them up to this point and have stuck with fresh step. for my cats, it retaines the moisture the best and they seem to like it with no problems. you can find it on sale at certain department stores in the large containers (in my neck of the woods that would be target).

Lol, Science Diet is a lot more pricey :P A 20 pound bag of Science Diet is $30 while an 18 pound bag of regular Purina is $13 and a 16 pound bag of premium Purina One is $20. Science Diet isn't carried close to here though, (small town) so I'd either have to drive far or have it shipped, which adds on shipping costs. Of course, I've also heard that premium foods are more dense, so your cats don't have to eat as much to be full, so that could also even out costs. I think for now the upgrade is going to be to Purina One (because that's pretty good I've heard looking at your guys' reference articles), and then in a couple months when I can afford it I'll switch to Hill's Science Diet. :)
