Mr. Blue has a new skin problem, and the vet is stumped
Hello everyone,
Mr. Blue has been having some weird skin problems over the last couple of weeks. It first started one evening when I was petting his chest/belly, and noticed blood on my hand. I washed and put some antibiotic cream on it, figuring he'd just scraped himself on something. Then about a week ago, it happened again, but in a different spot. Last night, we noticed a tiny red ring, white in the center, on his belly. This morning it was a bloody scab, so it was off to the vets for us. I was really worried it was skin cancer or something. The vet doesn't know what it is, but she said skin cancer doesn't present like that. She also doesn't think it's an allergic reaction to something, because it's so limited. She would expect a wider area to be affected. The recommendation she gave was, first, to bring him in immediately if we notice any bumps forming on his belly, or the minute we see another red ring. In the meantime, she wants us to add 500 mg. Vitamin C to his routine, and said that was supposed to be good for skin problems. Vit. E was also recommended, but he gets that already in his fatty acid capsule. She did say one possibility is an autoimmune disorder of some kind. She said if they ever get to see a bump, they'll biopsy it. What kind of autoimmune disorder could it be, do you think? I'm afraid I was so relieved to hear that she didn't suspect skin cancer that I didn't ask that

Thanks Davet! She didn't mention this; what is it? I don't think I've ever heard of it. I really hope it is something that could be stopped with an antibiotic; an autoimmune disorder sounds a lot more frightening! It's amazing how many questions I think of after seeing the vet!

ptoderma is strictly a guess with out seeing the skin but i sure think it is a good possibility---again without seeing the lesions etc...

I didn't know what it was either. It was hard to figure out the spelling.

Thanks so much Davet and Amanda's Mom! How you figured out the spelling, AM, I don't know; I guess practice makes perfect I'm wondering now why this vet didn't take stronger action, like a culture or an antibiotic. Maybe she's hoping, as am I, that the Vitamins and antibacterial treatment will take care of the problem for him. She approved of his food (he's now eating "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover"). I really do think their new vet hospital should be called "Mr. Blue's Skin Problems"! They're happy that I bring him in when I see something suspicious; I of course couldn't imagine not doing that! He sure doesn't mind getting a Vit. C tablet wrapped in cheese! Speaking of, I don't ever remember hearing that Vit. C was good for skin problems. I always thought it was just Vit. E. She said he should have 200 mg. of that, but his fatty acid supplement is in IU's, not mgs, so I'm going to do a search for a conversion of these. I know that's not a vitamin I want to give too much of, so I definitely want to be careful!

When you mentioned a red ring with a white center, it made me think of a staph infection Carter got on his belly, it looked similar to that. Has the vet ruled that out? It is treatable with antibiotics.

Re: Mr. Blue has a new skin problem, and the vet is stumped
Thanks Kristin! She didn't mention it, but the link Amanda's Mom gave does say that a lot of the "superficial pyoderma lesions are caused by a staph bacteria. I had wondered about this, too, because Mr. Blue had a staph infection before, in his "armpits." for that one, too, the vet wanted us to start off trying topical treatments before going with an antibiotic tablet. It didn't clear up, however, until he was given one. He didn't have the red rings with that one, though, or maybe I just didn't/couldn't see it. I wonder now what it is in thee bacterial infection that causes that red ring.
Re: Mr. Blue has a new skin problem, and the vet is stumped
Red rings can also indicate potential for ringworm (especially if you and Mr Blue have been around any other dogs with the condition). Ringworm gives the appearance of a bullseye.
You can try just putting vitamin e oil on it to help soothe any irritation, if that doesn't work, ask your vet for panalog, if he responds to that, chances are it is a hot spot (although the area is unusual for a hot spot, they are usually on limbs, elbows, joints, neck or chest)
If nothing topical works or the area doesn't improve within a week, I would definately opt for a culture to at least isolate it and see what antibiotic approach would be more appropriate.

Re: Mr. Blue has a new skin problem, and the vet is stumped
Just guessing, I'd say it could be an infection related to dry skin. Traci's suggestion to put Vit-E oil on the area would help treat the dry skin. If it gets worse with the Vit-E oil, that would suggest something 'yeasty' like Malassezia. Although I would think staph or strep would be much more likely. Hope you figure it out and Mr. Blue gets better. Good luck.
